Latino Pastors and Their Spouses' Marital Satisfaction and Its Predicting Factors

Latino Pastors and Their Spouses' Marital Satisfaction and Its Predicting Factors PDF Author: Tanya Paniagua
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Hispanic American clergy
Languages : en
Pages : 112

Book Description
The Latino population in the United States has been the primary driver of demographic growth in the country (Flores, 2017). With this increasing shift in America, it is important to investigate the unique strains on clergy families among Latino pastors as evidence suggests stress is a threat to marital satisfaction and its longevity (Randall & Bodenmann, 2009). Very little literature on marital dynamics has focused on Latino pastors; thus, a need exists for more research in examining how cultural values and acculturation impact marital satisfaction while considering the relationship between marital satisfaction and selected variables: affection, sexual satisfaction, communication, burnout, and loneliness. The goal of this study is to examine marital satisfaction in Latino pastors and their spouses and how selected predicting factors influence satisfaction. This study will utilize a quantitative survey design on a population of 30-40 Latino pastors and their spouses. Data collection will be completed online through an internet survey program. Participants will complete a demographic questionnaire, the couples satisfaction index (CSI-32), the short acculturation scale for Hispanics (SASH), the index of sexual satisfaction (ISS), the communications patterns questionnaire-short form (CQP-SF), a supplemental question regarding affection, the Maslach burnout inventory, and the UCLA loneliness scale. Correlational analyses will be utilized to examine the relationship between marital satisfaction and its predicting factors. Acculturation will act as a moderator to analyze how it may differentially moderate affection, communication, affection, burnout, and loneliness in predicting marital satisfaction. The findings of this study may provide relevant data to counselors to increase familiarity with the counseling needs of this growing group.

The impact of family satisfaction upon Christian life in Korean-American interracial families

The impact of family satisfaction upon Christian life in Korean-American interracial families PDF Author: Heung Ki Lee

Book Description
"This project is a survey-based research project on the relationship between satisfaction with family life and one's Christian life. The researcher's ministry setting is a church in which more than 90% of the congregation consists of families established through international marriages. During his 10 years of immigrant-focused ministry, the researcher has discovered that families established through international marriage suffer from conflicts that arise through cultural and emotional differences, language barriers, attitudes toward child education, expression of affection and so forth. Couples of international marriages experience a lack of conversation and an inability to communicate deeply, due to the language barrier. There are also misunderstandings in expressing affection, due to cultural differences. Difficulties and conflicts exist because of differing economic views, differing attitudes about child education, personal differences, and so forth. Such family problems affect the Christian life negatively. Therefore, the researcher began the research in order to study the problems in detail and learn how to most effectively address the issues. The purpose of the research is to study how the satisfaction level of family life affects Christian life and to find out how best to address the situation. The research is important in that it can help family ministries, help develop an effective marriage therapy and recovery program, provide information for those who are planning on participating in an international marriage, prevent divorce, and facilitate church growth as a result. The research examined the level of marital satisfaction and one's Christian life based on conversation, the level of marital satisfaction and one's Christian life based on ways of expressing affection, the level of marital satisfaction and one's Christian life based on differing attitudes about child education, the level of marital satisfaction and one's Christian life based on financial issue and the level of marital satisfaction and one's Christian life based on personal differences. As for research methods, surveys were conducted to determine the relationship between the satisfaction level with family life and one's Christian life. Additionally, a frequency analysis and cross analysis were conducted. The researcher conducted surveys among six churches, excluding the researcher's church. The researcher sent 200 copies of the surveys, and 113 completed copies of the survey (55.6%) were collected. Among them, six copies were discarded for being inappropriate for the research. For the analysis of the surveys, 107 copies were cross-analyzed. The results of the research revealed that the satisfaction level with family life affects one's Christian life. In other words, when the husband and wife had satisfactory conversations, their attitudes towards offering were positive. When sexual satisfaction was low, the husband and wife seemed to serve less. In addition, satisfaction with finances was related to tithing. Satisfaction in child education was related to prayer life, and satisfaction in expressing affection had positive influences on prayer, offering, witnessing, serving and so forth. The results of the research indicate that immigrant churches need to provide internationally married couples with regular family seminars and language education for cultural adaptation. In addition, the researcher realized that the education of proper biblical values in regards to marriage, regular visitations and counseling ministry are necessary"--Abstract.

Book Description
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in marital quality between full-time and bivocational pastors and their spouses in the Church of the Nazarene. While the denomination is a world-wide organization this study only considered clergy couples in the United States of America. The denomination has seventy-five districts in the United States. Originally, ten districts were randomly selected, however, due to a low response rate; five additional districts were purposely selected based on the availability of email addresses for the pastors. A mailing was sent to senior pastors and their spouses from the original ten districts. E-mails were sent to senior pastors and their spouses from all fifteen districts. A link was included in the e-mail that directed the individual to the K-State On-line Survey System. From the mail and the e-mail there were one hundred and ninety-nine responses. The survey included the following instruments: the Clergy Family Life Inventory, the Ministry Demand Inventory (Impact and Times), the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale, and the Reduced Sound Marital House. Qualitative questions were also asked according to the individuals' position (i.e. Full-time Pastor, Full-time Pastor's Spouse, Bivocational Pastor, Bivocational Pastor's Spouse). There were six propositions developed for this study, these were: demands of the ministry have a negative effect on marital quality; intrusive congregational expectations have a negative effect on marital quality; the pastor's own expectations for his/her work with the church will have an effect on his/her marital quality; financial stress will have an adverse effect on marital quality; marital quality is adversely affected when the spouse works outside of the home in order to meet the family budget; and, accepting the influence of his/her spouse has a positive affect on marital quality. Only the last proposition was confirmed. The findings suggest that there is no difference in marital quality between full-time and bivocational clergy couples. However, the reader most also consider the phenomena of social desirability in the context of this research.
