Benito Pérez Galdos is a 19th Century Spanish author considered second only to Miguel de Cervantes in Spanish Literature. Though Galdos wrote a myriad of works, the most significant can be considered the novels in the series Episodios Nacionales, based upon the historic events that took place in his homeland starting with the Spanish War of Independence. Throughout the series, Galdos is a master at mixing fictional characters with historical figures of the era. Through the following analysis of his use of various fictional character names in the novels one discovers Galdos' creative genius along with one facet of what gives the works great literary value along with its already historic one.
