A sympathetic flare is defined as one which starts through some influence of another flare which erupted earlier. At least one example as been observed directly. Pure chance should produce many simultaneous flares. Several authors have tested the statistical reality of sympathetic flares by comparing the observed and expected numbers of simultaneous flares. Results of such studies have been contradictory. One method has been applied to Sacramento Peak flares during the IGY, with definitely negative results. T e statistical methods are examined critically, with the conclusion that sympathetic flares must be very rare. (Author).

East-west asymmetry of flares exists, but is not statistically significant. Flare distribution in heliocentric longitude is discussed, and criticized as an indication of flare geometry. Area frequency functions in distinct radial zonesARE APPLIED TO DETERMINE FORESHORTENING CORRECTION FACTORS. Flare growth curves, defined by times of start, maximum, and end, are found to correlate well with maximum area (importance), but not with position on the disk, duration, or estimated intensity. INHOMOGENEITIES AND INCONSISTENCIES IN THE PUBLISHED INTERNATIONAL FLARE DATA PRESENT THE NEED FOR CRITICAL EDITING OF THESE DATA BEFORE THEY CAN BE TREATED STATISTICALLY. After suitable correction, observed monthly incidence of flares is tabulated. Hours of effective parol must be calculated from hours of actual patrol. When these data are available, actual hemispheric flare incidence can be estimated. Flare incidence thus found is correlated moderately well with sunspot number, and with the rate of formation of new active regions. The same analysisALSO PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE RELATIVE FREQUENCY OF FLARES OF DIFFERENT IMPORANCE. Kleczek's imporices.
