In an experiment performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), 11 e$sup +$e$sup -$ pairs of high invariant mass value (greater than 2.5 GeV/ c$sup 2$) were observed. Of these events, 9 can be interpreted as arising from the reaction p + p $Yields$ J(3.1) + anything. The cross section for this reaction is estimated and compared with the result obtained at lower center-of- mass energies. (auth).

A search for massive photon pair production at .sqrt.s = 63 GeV has been carried out on the data sample previously employed for the electron pair production study. Positive evidence is reported for m/sub .gamma gamma./> 6 GeV, with a production cross-section similar to Drell-Yan electron pairs. The ratio .gamma gamma./.pi.°.pi.° was measured to be approx. 10−3 for a p/sub T/ of each .gamma. or .pi.° above 3 GeV/c.

The cross section for J/psi and .gamma. production in proton--proton collisions was measured at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings for center-of-mass energies up to .sqrt.s = 63 GeV. Electrons were identified using lithium foil transition radiators and liquid argon calorimeters, which also measure their energy. Results are reported as a function of .sqrt.s and P/sub perpendicular/. In addition to the J/psi and .gamma. they cover the production of electron pairs with invariant masses from 6 to 8.7 GeV. 10 references.
