Book Description
Excerpt from A Sketch of the History of the City of Dayton This little volume originally appeared, in July last, as an introduction to Odell's Dayton Directory & Business Advertiser. The gentleman, on whom the Publisher depended on for writing the History of Dayton, having been prevented by other engagements from fulfilling his design, application was made to me a few days before that work was put to press, to furnish it. I had not therefore leisure to write such a history that I could have wished, but I thought that this sketch might be of service to some future local historian. I consulted the Western Spy of Cincinnati, 1799-1804; Burnet's Notes; Perkins's Western Annals; Atwater's History of Ohio; Howe's Ohio Historical Collection; the newspapers generally; tombstones; advertisements; recitals in deeds and wills; the public records; Chase's Sketch of the History of Ohio; the local and general laws; the City Ordinances; Carver's Travels &c. &c. I also derived much information from the testimony of eyewitnesses, which I wrote down immediately. The publisher wished to issue a second edition of this part of that volume, and thought it was so hastily written that the printers were at work on the first sheets of the manuscript, before I had collected the materials for the last. Book Description
Excerpt from An Outline of the History of Dayton, Ohio, 1796-1896 If Dayton's centennial is properly to be observed, the schools - including the three hundred teachers and the more than ten thousand boys and girls - must fill an important place and take a leading part. The children of to-day should become acquainted with the past, and duly recognize the planning and struggles that have made present advantages possible. Besides, every one who is to become a useful citizen must be led to cherish a local pride and public spirit such as a worthy celebration of the founding and growth of the city will surely tend to promote. The Board of Education have therefore provided that necessary books be supplied to the various schools and that a souvenir booklet containing an outline history of the city be put into the hands of each teacher and pupil. Class exercises, covering the history of Dayton and extending through a number of weeks, will be conducted by the teachers, the course to be followed with a suitable celebration in all of the schools. Through the kindness of Miss Mary D.Steele, author of the volume entitled "Early Dayton," and of Mr. W. J. Shuey, the publisher of the same, the following summary of history and excellent illustrations, chiefly taken from said volume, are made available. The Board desire to congratulate the teachers and pupils and the general public on the prosperity of the past, and to express the hope that higher successes will crown the years to come. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the City of Dayton and Montgomery County, Ohio, Vol. 2 Mr. Schenck was born in Franklin, Warren county, Ohio, October As the name indicates he came of Holland ancestry - a member of one of the' oldest Holland families of the new world. He made no boast of the fact and yet his ancestral history could be traced back in unbroken line from_ generation to generation through many centuries. The name appears in its primitive form in the Latin as P'incerna. In the fourth century Ulfilas, the Goth, made the liter ary world acquainted with the term' pugg, pronounced pung, and applied it to a purse or leather money bag. St. Jerome, about-a century afterward, mentions the barbarous word pincerna as the common appellation of the chief vintner in his day and adds that the office of cup-bearer was one of the first dignitaries in the courts of foreign princes. Under the form of Schenck the word relates more particularly to the office of cup-bearer and from this office this family name is derived. The erz - schenck was a hereditary dignity, a prefect of the household, next to the king or lord. After this office became an hereditary one in Europe many noble families bearing the name of Schenck became established. Especially in Germany and Holland these families were numerous, possessing various es cutcheons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
