Excerpt from Sight Reading in Latin, For The Second Year The material for sight reading offered in this book may be used in two ways. Teachers who believe that the passage for translation should be placed before the pupil without preparation, will suggest for his use nothing more than the vocabulary of new words, the notes, and the rule of order accompanying each selection. Those who believe that some preparation should be made will find material suggested at the beginning of each exercise. The grammatical references are to the common constructions found in the reading prescribed for the second year, and are illustrated in the selection which they introduce. The words which may be made the basis of a drill in inflections, as well as the words in the so-called "prescribed list," also occur in the passage. The latter are to be found in Professor Lodges List. They include two classes: those which occur for the first time in Books III, IV, and V of the Gallic War, and those which have not occurred often or which may not have been met by the pupil in his reading of Books I and II up to the time when he sees the passage for sight work. The words of the first class are printed in heavy-faced type in the prescribed list, and in the text of the exercises when the lists are discontinued. The meanings should be given by the teacher. The rules relating to the arrangement of the words in the sentence are intended to guide the pupil in observing the grouping of words and their dependence. The meaning of every word in the passage is given if not found in Lodge's List. Each exercise is complete in itself. Excerpt from Latin at Sight: With an Introduction, Suggestions for Sight-Reading, and Selections for Practice This little book is an outgrowth of a teacher's attempt to teach Latin. The greater part of it was prepared in 1886, but any further attention to it was precluded by a prolonged absence from America. The Introduction is intended for teachers rather than for pupils. No attempt has been made to divide the book into Lessons, but it is believed that the running catch-words will facilitate its use. The grammar references are to the books of Allen and Greenough (abbreviated A. And Gildersleeve and Harkness It goes without saying that these pages are not so much intended for persons who can read Latin as for those who desire to learn how to do so, both for such as have, after a considerable expenditure of toil and patience, thus far failed to learn, and for those who are more fortunate in that they have not yet tried and failed. The second part on How to Read is followed by about one hundred and eighty Selection: for Practice. Some attempt has been made to graduate these Selections. While I would not fail to recognize the work of the pioneers in this field, to whom I owe much of whatever success I may have had in this line of endeavor, and to whom reference is more directly made in these pages, I feel myself under especially great obligation to Professor J.
