Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of the Free Churches This little book is but a "Short History of the Free Churches," and makes no pretensions to completeness. It has been prepared principally for the use of young people connected with Nonconformity, who have few opportunities of perusing larger works on the subject, in the hope that it may confirm them in their attachment to Free Church Principles, and lead them to value more highly the Religious Privileges which their spiritual forefathers have won for them at so great a cost. Moreover, as a considerable amount of care has been taken in setting forth briefly the outlines of the story, preparing the Chronological Table, verifying dates, and making a fairly full index, the author, who has had the valuable assistance of the Rev. T. G. Crippen, Librarian of the Congregational Library, trusts that what he has written may prove useful to ministers and others, as a first book of reference to the main facts of Free Church History. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. A Primer of Free Church History (Classic Reprint)

A Primer of Free Church History (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Arthur Johnson Evans

Book Description
Excerpt from A Primer of Free Church History This little book has been written mainly with the object of interesting the young people of all ages who are connected with the Evangelical Free Churches, and of setting them on the right course of study in order to arrive at a proper knowledge of the history of their spiritual forefathers. For this purpose, great care has been taken to make the story historically accurate, or as nearly so as is possible within the limits assigned. The author has attempted to be strictly fair to men of all parties, and has avoided all assumptions that, in the conflicts of past times, one side was right and the other necessarily wrong. This method of writing, of course, deprives the reader of some of that glow which comes from the perusal of books that are more partisan, but the loss is surely compensated by the increased historical sense which results from a more sober view of old controversies. Book Description
Excerpt from A Popular History of the Free Churches In sending this book forth, I am glad to think that it may be of some service in the great struggles that await Free Churchmen. The story I have had to tell is full of inspiration and encouragement. It is the story of an unconquerable spirit dedicated to the service of an indestructible ideal. While the men and women of the Free Churches are bracing themselves to renew the fight for unsectarian education and religious equality it may be well that they refresh their memories of those illustrious forbears who helped to make England great. Readers of these pages will see that while Puritanism has assumed various forms, it has always stood for a spiritual interpretation of Christianity and the Christian Church. This spiritual interpretation, as Milton said, "it hath befallen us to assert, with God's assistance, ... against regal tyranny over the State, and State tyranny over the Church." New Short History of the Catholic Church

New Short History of the Catholic Church PDF Author: Norman Tanner
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1441162127
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
____________ 'A useful book of reference by the master of the history of the councils of the Church... There is enormous value in a short, reliable, and careful study of a sequence of events that may have unfamiliar joinings and passageways to modern believers...' - Catholic Historical Review 'A short, readable and informed survey of church history.' - The Church of England Newspaper 'A rich foundation for Catholic understanding and witness.' - Catholic San Francisco ____________ A one-volume history of the Christian people from Pentecost to the present day, with principal focus on the Catholic Church. Having passed AD 2000 it seems appropriate and necessary to have a new short history of the first two millennia of the Christian era. In the last half century there has been a massive amount of research into Church history, published in learned articles and in multi-volume works. Full notice is taken of these recent scholarly initiatives in writing this short account, which is also eminently readable. In each section there is a balance between the institutional and the more directly religious dimensions of the Church - here are some of the elements: bishops, canon law, charity, councils crusades, devotions, heresies, laity, liturgy, martyrs, missionaries, parishes, pilgrimages, popes, prayer, priesthood, religious orders, sacraments, schools, theologians, universities and the vita consacrata. The scope is wide; the pace of the narrative is attractive.
