Book Description
Excerpt from The Economic History of England, Vol. 2: The Age of Mercantilism The reception accorded to the first volume has encouraged me to attempt a further instalment. The delay in publication is owing to various causes - the pressure of other duties, the range of the material which I have endeavoured to lay under contribution, and the strain which the task has placed upon health none too robust. That these volumes appear at all, in spite of many difficulties, is due to the oft-repeated wish of some who read the first volume that I should continue this History. Now the continuation is in their hands, I can only express the sincere hope that it may not unduly dis appoint any expectations which they may have formed. These volumes cover the period extending from the accession of Queen Elizabeth to the Industrial Revolution and the Agrarian Revolution of the later eighteenth century. In each section I have chosen what seemed to be the most appropriate point of conclusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An Economic History of England: the Eighteenth Century

An Economic History of England: the Eighteenth Century PDF Author: T.S. Ashton
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136587063
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
T.S. Ashton has sought less to cover the field of economic history in detail than to offer a commentary, with a stress on trends of development rather than on forms of organization or economic legislation. This book seeks to interpret the growth of population, agriculture, maufacture, trade and finance in eighteenth-century England. It throws light on economic fluctuations and on the changing conditions of the wage-earners. The approach is that of an economist and use is made of hitherto neglected statistics. But treatment and language are simple. The book is intended not only for the specialist but also for others who turn to the past for its own sake or for understanding the present. This book was first published in 1955.

The Transformation of England

The Transformation of England PDF Author: Peter Mathias
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136600221
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
Peter Mathias’s subject is the creation in late eighteenth-century England of the industrial system – and thereby the present world. That unique conjuncture poses the sharpest questions about the nature of industrialization, social change and historical explanation, issues that are his principal scholarly concern. For many readers these collected studies will be as indispensable as the author’s general introduction, The First Industrial Nation, whether for the richness of their material or the freedom and subtlety of his analysis. These fascinating essays are divided into two groups: general themes, the ‘uniqueness’ in Europe of the industrial revolution, capital formation, taxation, the growth of skills, science and technical change, leisure and wages, diagnoses of poverty; and topics, the social structure, the industrialization of brewing, coinage, agriculture and the drink industries, advances in public health and the armed forces, British and American public finance in the War of Independence, Dr Johnson and the business world. This book was first published in 1979.

Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... appendix I wages and prices The problem of calculating the real wages of labour in England began to attract attention at the close of the eighteenth century. On the one hand collections of contemporary evidence were begun both by private individuals and in government enquiries; on the other several writers tried to collect evidence for earlier periods. In regard to the latter problem little real progress was made until the third quarter of the nineteenth century, when Thorold Rogers published a mass of price and wage statistics derived principally from ms. sources; this collection remains the prime authority for the years from 1270 until the close of the eighteenth century. From about 1760 onwards the mass of available material grows and becomes almost unmanageable in the last decades of the nineteenth century. Since the death of Thorold Rogers much has been done by English students towards a history of wages in the nineteenth century; they have, however, left the history of wages before 1790 almost untouched. Even the work done by Thorold Rogers has been somewhat neglected by later historians 1; Dr. Cunningham in a short appendix to his third volume summarises some of the difficulties involved in the " Interpretation of Historical Statistics," 2 and gives "for what they are worth" the calculations made by Young in 1812, in preference to the results of Thorold Rogers' more elaborate investigation. Meantime the whole field has been surveyed by a Swedish writer--Dr. Steffen--in his " History of English Wage-earners," which is accessible in German to students but is still, for lack of a translation, closed to the majority of Englishmen. Dr. Steffen has kindly permitted the present writer to reproduce in the accompanying charts some of the...
