Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1839 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF THE SPERM WHALE. It will be seen, in the following compilation of the anatomy and physiology of the sperm whale, which I have gleaned from the various naturalists who have from time to time written upon these interesting subjects, that I have largely availed myself of the inimitable paper, originally presented to the Royal Society by the great John Hunter, which treats of the structure and economy of whales. I have thought proper to reprint nearly the whole of this paper, because of the exceedingly interesting nature of its contents, --not because it does not treat solely of the anatomy of the sperm whale, but because it contains passages so highly original and profound, not only of whales in general, and of the sperm whale in particular, that to have left this article without it, a mere barren chapter would have presented itself, wholly without interest. For although the structural and functional developements of several kinds of whales are considered in that learned paper, the peculiarities of which are exposed with amazing judgment by our great naturalist, still the reader will observe that there is a strong analogy among them in the internal arrangement of their organs; as in the stomach, liver, parts of generation in both sexes, and also in the kidney, lungs, and brain; and where they differ in organic development, the gifted author beautifully describes the alteration and its object. In fact, as far as I have examined, and I believe that I have perused every writer of note on these subjects, there is not a paper, or any work on "record, equal in any degree to that which was produced by Hunter; for although much, very much, remains to be known of the structure and economy of the sperm and other...

A Savage History

A Savage History PDF Author: John Sefton Newton
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781459665347
Category : Large print books
Languages : en
Pages : 425

Book Description
Nothing prepares you for your first sight of the world's largest mammal. Celebrated, revered, studied and increasingly watched for pleasure rather than hunted, whales hold particular allure. Humans have always been in awe of them, but for much of history we have been compelled to dominate and kill them - though like Moby Dick, sometimes whales fight back. A Savage History tells the rich history of whales and whaling. We learn about these highly intelligent and magnificent creatures, and follow the stories of whalers from the eighteenth century who hunted their prey along the coasts of Australia and New Zealand, across the Pacific and into the Southern Ocean. The result is a powerful account of a complex and bloody relationship. Although the modern era has seen the end of industrial whaling, as John Newton shows, the work of those who want to protect whales is far from over.

Follow the Whale

Follow the Whale PDF Author: Ivan T. Sanderson
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1789124042
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 729

Book Description
From time immemorial man has pursued the whale. Follow the Whale, which was first published in 1956, tells the story of the people who have engaged in that pursuit—its historical, cultural and economic consequences. In narrative never less thrilling for sticking close to the known facts, biologist Ivan Sanderson has recreated the whole fabulous saga of whaling through the ages—not only from the beginning of recorded history but long before. “The story that follows is an attempt to display this fascinating facet of human endeavor in some semblance of its entirety and in proper perspective by a process of corralling the forgotten and more neglected aspects of whaling history and the new discoveries about the whales themselves, and weaving them into a continuous web of narrative. It is primarily natural history, in both senses of that term. It is the history of man’s conquest of the sea, a saga with a theme so inexorable that it can only be described as natural, and it is a natural history of a group of animals than which there are none more mysterious or romantic in the world. To follow the whale is to follow the whole course of one of the most important and significant aspects of our own history. It is virtually the story of the conquest of our planet.”
