While Stocks Last

While Stocks Last PDF Author: Yvonne Sadovy
Publisher: Adb Pacific Studies
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
This study brings together the work of many researchers to arrive at suggestions for solving the environmental problems caused by the long-running live-fish trade in Southeast Asia. With strong demand coming from mainland China, this trade has caused rampant over-fishing in Asia and consequent damage to outside subsistence or commercial fisheries. This work discusses the role of regional organizations in regulating the trade as well as ways to decrease nontarget fish mortality in an industry that often employs cyanide solution as a fishing tool.

CITES and the sea

CITES and the sea PDF Author: Pavitt, A., Malsch, K., King, E., Chevalier, A., Kachelriess, D., Vannuccini, S., Friedman, K.

Book Description
Fish and fish products are amongst the most highly traded food items in the world today, with most of the world’s countries reporting some fish trade. This assessment of commercial trade in CITES-listed marine species occurs within a broader context of globalization and a more general rapid expansion of the international trade in fish and fish products. It summarizes ten years (2007–2016) of trade in a subset of commercially exploited marine taxa listed in CITES Appendix II. We examine both CITES trade data reporting processes (including information on the practical elements of reporting by CITES Parties) and analyse CITES trade records. The analysis shows how, for Appendix II CITES-listed marine species, the overall number of direct export transactions reported by CITES Parties has increased sevenfold during 1990–2016 and how trade for each CITES-listed marine species sub-group has changed through time. An assessment is made, with assistance from species and trade experts, on the strengths and challenges of collating and reporting on trade in CITES-listed marine species. Additional datasets of relevance to marine species trade are highlighted, and recommendations for further refining and improving CITES trade reporting for marine species are provided.

Global Report on the Biology, Fishery and Trade of Precious Corals

Global Report on the Biology, Fishery and Trade of Precious Corals PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251316988
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
This document has been prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in accordance with a request from CITES (CoP Decision 17.191 on Precious corals, for consideration at the 30th meeting of the Animals Committee). The report concerns precious (red, pink, white and black) coral species within the hexacoral order Antipatharia, and the octocoral family Coralliidae. According to the requirements of CITES Decision 17.191, the study considers all available data and information on the biology, population status, use and trade in each species, including the identification of gaps in such data and information. It contains information on the management and harvest regulation schemes for these coral species, with the aim of considering the effectiveness of their management and conservation. The report intends to inform the CITES parties of the status of the management and trade of precious corals, in order to provide guidance on the actions needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of precious corals.

Bridging the gap between ocean acidification impacts and economic valuation

Bridging the gap between ocean acidification impacts and economic valuation PDF Author: International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). Global Marine and Polar Programme.
Publisher: IUCN
ISBN: 283171723X
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 140

Book Description
Following the first international workshop on the economics of ocean acidification organized by the Centre Scientifique de Monaco and the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2010, a second international workshop was held in November 2012, which explored the level of risk, and the resilience or vulnerability of defined regions of the world ocean in terms of fishery and aquaculture species and economic impacts, and social adaptation. This report includes the findings and recommendations of the respective regional working groups and is the result of an interdisciplinary survey of ocean acidification-sensitive fisheries and aquaculture.

The Banggai Cardinalfish

The Banggai Cardinalfish PDF Author: Alejandro A. Vagelli
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119950368
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
The Banggai cardinalfish, Pterapogon kauderni, is a fascinating species that possesses a series of remarkable biological characteristics making it unique among coral reef fishes. It has been the focus of studies in reproduction, ecology, population genetics and evolution. In addition, since its rediscovery in the late 1990s, it has become tremendously popular in the international ornamental fish trade, and indiscriminate collecting has led to its inclusion in the 2007 IUCN Red List as an endangered species. This book is divided into three main parts: a general introduction to the fish, including a historical synopsis with an overview of the Banggai Archipelago; a comprehensive treatment of the species’ natural history (distribution, morphology, reproduction, embryology, ecology, genetics, systematics and evolution); an account of the conservation of the species, including descriptions of its fishery, attempts to protect it under CITES, and introduction programmes. The book also includes an appendix offering information on captive breeding, juvenile mortality reduction, and common diseases. This book is a unique resource for ichthyology students and researchers working on fish biology, ecology and conservation, and for marine ornamental fish hobbyists and aquarium professionals.
