This quantitative correlational research study aimed to address the lack of work-life balance among public accounting professionals, potentially resulting in burnout and increased turnover intentions. A lack of work-life balance, burnout, and turnover has long been associated with the public accounting profession. This study looked to add to the body of knowledge by looking specifically at Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) registered with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) who currently work for public accounting firms. The study utilized information gathered from three valid and reliable survey instruments: the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Work-Life Balance Questionnaire, and Turnover Intention Questionnaire. The findings indicated a statistically significant relationship between work-life balance and burnout and work-life balance and turnover; however, the largest relationship was found between the two dependent variables, burnout and turnover. The findings are important to further understand and reduce the high employee turnover experienced by the accounting industry. This research reveals the areas in which public accounting firms should focus their human resource initiatives to improve the future of the public accounting industry.

Burnout in accounting is a significant problem that has numerous impacts on organizational effectiveness. Job burnout is the result of prolonged exposure to workload pressure and excessive job demands. As accounting professionals work in a fast-paced and regulated environment, it is important to better understand whether burnout is related to job dissatisfaction within the industry. Employee dissatisfaction can adversely affect organizational change, impacting job performance, turnover intentions, and work attitudes. Organizations need to recognize the negative impacts of burnout in accounting and address ways to increase job satisfaction and workplace productivity. The purpose of this quantitative research was to investigate the relationship between perceived burnout and job satisfaction in Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in California. Survey data were collected using Maslach’s Burnout Inventory and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, and correlational analysis was used to examine the relationship between the three dimensions of burnout and job satisfaction. The results of this research support earlier research, indicated by a statistically significant negative relationship between exhaustion and job satisfaction, and also between cynicism and job satisfaction. The results further indicated a statistically significant positive relationship between perceived professional efficacy and job satisfaction. This research may encourage organizational leaders to implement business policies that promote human resource management practices designed to alleviate burnout, improve job satisfaction, and promote retention of CPAs.

Scholars and practitioners agree burnout is a significant problem plaguing the public accounting industry. Burnout is a condition that results from long periods of excessive strain on personal resources, and is often found in public accounting professionals due to the high stress and deadline-driven environment. As the causes for burnout are better understood, the focus has turned to why some individuals are more likely to burnout than others. Identifying who has a tendency to burnout can only help in the quest for solutions. The purpose of this correlational quantitative study was to test the theoretical framework of Maslach and Jackson (1981) by examining the relationship between gender, age, and burnout in a large, national public accounting firm in the United States. Data was collected through anonymous surveys of the client-service professionals of one large, national public accounting firm, and analysis included multiple regression models using age and gender as the independent variables, and the three dimensions of burnout as the dependent variables. Only a weak correlation was identified between age and the dimensions of burnout, while an even weaker correlation resulted between gender and the dimensions of burnout. The results of the study indicated that young, female are more likely to experience the characteristics of burnout, but the regression models were not deemed reliable for use in predicting burnout using age and gender. The data analysis indicated that additional independent variables would be needed to reliably predict the dimensions of burnout within the surveyed population.

Extant research on work-life balance (WLB) is often conducted with gaps in the measurement of the construct, as most studies have primarily assessed "life" as it relates to family commitments. Thus, the present study aimed to reconceptualize the measurement of work-life balance as work/non-work balance with non-work being time spent on activities that are not work-related - be it family or non-family activities. To this end, the present study developed a scale to measure work/non-work balance in terms of (1) perceived personal free time, (2) perceived organizational support, (3) psychological effects of work on life, and (4) time management skills. Data for this study were collected through Amazon MTurk on a sample of 318 individuals. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation models (SEM) were utilized to ascertain the measurement structure of the new scale and examine relationships between work/non-work balance, job burnout, and turnover intentions. Overall, three of the four factors functioned properly with the final scale comprised of 9-items, 3 for each of the three remaining factors - perceived personal free time, perceived organizational support, and psychological effects of work on life. Furthermore, the study found significant relationships between the subfactors' perceived organizational support and psychological effects of work on life, on job burnout, and turnover intentions. This study presents several theoretical and practical implications to the growing field of work-life balance research

The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate the relationships between stressors, coping, burnout, somatic ill health, depression, performance, organizational commitment and turnover intentions with particular reference to different demographic segments in different types of universities of Pakistan. In this context firstly we aimed to understand the relationships between four main stressors (Work Overload, Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict and Work-life Imbalance) and Burnout (Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization). Moreover, we aimed to identify the relationship between burnout and its consequences i.e. Somatization, Depression, Performance, Organizational Commitment and Turnover Intentions. At the core of our model was the moderating impact of coping strategies on the relationships mentioned above. These coping mechanisms included Proactive Planning, Boss Support, Colleague Support, General Social Support, Turning To God, Positive Reinterpretation, Avoidance and Mind Deviation. The quantitative and cross sectional survey research design was used to collect data based on a sample of 450 academic staff in private, public and semi-government universities of the KPK province of Pakistan The total questionnaires considered for analysis were 274. The preliminary data analysis, EFAs and CFAs demonstrated that our data was quasi normal and our variables possessed good psychometric properties. We tested our research hypotheses through structured regression models in AMOS and multiple hierarchical regression using SPSS. The results revealed that Work-Life Imbalance, Role Ambiguity and Work Overload showed significant positive impact on burnout. Results also demonstrated that burnout had a significant positive impact on Somatization, Depression and Turnover Intentions and a significant negative impact on Organizational Commitment and Performance. The Majority of the hypotheses related to moderating impact of social support and coping mechanisms were not supported by our results. Contrary to our hypotheses, Proactive Planning, Boss Support, General Social Support and Mind Deviation proved to be non-effective coping strategies. Despite of its limitations, this thesis has made some important academic and methodological contributions along with managerial implications. Few suggestions for future research have been also made at the end.

This quantitative study examined the relationships between the burnout of Radiologic Technologists and the variables of Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs) and turnover intention. The researcher was interested in knowing if higher levels of burnout in Radiologic Technologists resulted in increased turnover intention. The researcher was also interested in knowing whether or not OCBs influenced the strength of the relationship between burnout and turnover intention. Data were collected from 961 participants composed of Radiologic Technologists working within a large integrated managed care consortium, located in Northern California. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire was used to ascertain participant burnout scores. A 24-item scale was utilized to measure OCBs of the participants. The measure consisted of five dimensions: altruism, conscientiousness, sportsmanship, courtesy and civic virtue. Additionally, turnover intention was measured as the level of intent to leave the organization. The study then utilized a regression analysis in order to examine the relationship between the burnout of Radiologic Technologists and the different variables. The results of the study indicate that neither burnout nor OCBs, nor their interaction, explained a significant amount of variance in turnover intention. Thus, none of the three null hypotheses was rejected. Additionally, the regression analysis utilizing bootstrapping did not appreciably change any of the coefficient p -values. The results of the study did, in fact, indicate that neither burnout nor OCBs, nor their interaction, explained a significant amount of variance in turnover intention. However, the study did demonstrate that the Radiologic Technologist sample demonstrated high levels of OCBs. These high levels of OCBs suggest that the Radiologic Technologists are willing to voluntarily help others to prevent a problem, take efforts to exceed established expectations, participate in organizational processes and demonstrate a positive attitude while in the workplace.
