The Norfolk Village Green (Classic Reprint)

The Norfolk Village Green (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Frederic S. Dennis

ISBN: 9781332169498
Category : Reference

Pages : 180

Book Description
Excerpt from The Norfolk Village Green This brochure, published for private circulation only, will attain its object if it inspires the sacred duty of preserving the beautiful Village Green of Norfolk, and of handing it down in all its glory of historical tradition, local association and natural beauty, to future generations. As all the village greens of New England have a certain common significance, it opens with a description of them in general, and passes on to describe in detail the Norfolk Green, and to narrate the principal events that have occurred upon it. The inspiration to write a brief historical sketch of my mothers birthplace was derived from the words of Rev. Dr. Joseph Eldridge in one of his Thanksgiving sermons, in which he said: "It is a duty of filial piety, as well as gratitude to the supreme disposer of events, to gather up, and preserve, and transmit all the memorials we can, of the labors, trials and achievements of those who have preceded us on the spot where we dwell." A chronological table giving a brief history of the town from its incorporation to the present time is added. Norwood

Norwood PDF Author: Henry Ward Beecher

Book Description
Excerpt from Norwood: Or, Village Life in New England Life Before the Civil War, I had for several years been a regular contributor to the New York Ledger. During that great conflict I had almost entirely ceased writing for it. But when the war was closed, I was not unwilling to seek rest or relaxation from the exhausting excitement of public affairs, by turning my mind into entirely new channels of thought and interest. In this mood I received Mr. Bonner's proposal to write a story for the Ledger. Had it been a request to carve a statue or build a man-of-war, the task would hardly have seemed less likely of accomplishment. A very moderate reader, even, of fictions, I had never studied the mystery of their construction. Plot and counterplot, the due proportion of parts, the whole machinery of a novel, seemed hopelessly outside of my studies. But after-considerations came to my relief. I reflected that any real human experience was intrisically interesting; that the life of a humble family for a single day, even if not told as skilfully as Wordsworth sung the humble aspects of the natural world, or as minutely faithful as Crabbe depicted English village-life, could hardly fail to win some interest. The habit of looking upon men as the children of God, and heirs of immorality, can hardly fail to clothe the simplest and most common elements of daily life with importance, and even with dignity. Nothing is trivial in the education of the King's Son! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Under Fire: A Tale of New England Village Life "Well, Dave, it was a close game, but we managed to save ourselves after all their talk," said Tom Martin, referring to a baseball match of the previous day. "Yes, but thanks to our lucky stars that Fred Worthington was with us. If John Rexford had kept him at the store, as I was afraid, we should have been badly beaten." "He didn't play the whole game, did he?" asked Tom sarcastically. "Of course not," retorted Dave Farrington, with some warmth, "but you know very well we should have lost it, if had not been for him. If he saved us from defeat, why not be fair and give him credit for it? I am sure he would do as much for you if the case were reversed." "I didn't say anything against him." "No;but you don't appear to say anything for him." "Why should I?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
