Book Description
Speaker Hawke wants things to be better for her than they were for her mother when she grew up on the Tohono Oodham Reservation outside Tucson. That wish leads her to take John Overland for a short walk early one Saturday morning. She smokes a joint just as two pickups race across the valley below them. And that starts everything that follows. The next morning, she goes to visit her friend and discovers a blood bath. Dorinda's parents are gruesomely dead and her friend is missing. That spurs John Overland into action, into a mystery where he will meet FBI agents, crooked cops, drug dealers from Nogales, Mexico, and old Indians who live in hovels dug out of hillsides. It all leads to something he suspects might be a drug hit on Dorinda's parents. The deeper he digs into the death of her parents, however, the more he is convinced that something hideously heinous is about to happen in southern Arizona. Though it is difficult to accept, he does believe one thing: he will not live through it. Read Bordering On Hatred to discover what John Overland is fighting. Join John as he is shown how to prevent a holocaust that would pit race-against-race, brother-against-brother and friend-against-friend.

Face and Face Practices in Chinese Talk-in-interaction

Face and Face Practices in Chinese Talk-in-interaction PDF Author: Wei-Lin Melody Chang
Publisher: Equinox Publishing (UK)
ISBN: 9781781791349
Category : Chinese language
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The main purpose of this book is to address the knowledge-gap in the field by focusing on the importance of emic conceptualizations (face1) in theorizing face, since existing research on face to date has tended to rely on the etic perspective (face2) in theorizing and conceptualizing face. However, in applying an interactional pragmatics approach instead of simply describing Chinese in a normative, and thus potentially stereotypical manner, through drawing only on folk notions and discourse, this book contributes to face research and pragmatics research in general. It builds on an analysis of original face-to-face interactional data and employs a combination of methodological approaches to analyze face in business setting. Moreover, this work is the very first study to examine face and face practices in Chinese employing Face Constituting Theory (FCT) as the theoretical framework. In doing so it provides empirical support for the importance of examining the cognitive and the interactional aspects of face practices, as well as providing insightful perspectives on the complex interactional moves that participants employ in managing their interpersonal relationships in the process of attaining significant interactional goals in business interactions and mediations. In this way, the book addresses key current debates regarding how face should be conceptualized and theorized. It also demystifies Chinese communication through the detailed analysis undertaken, and thereby illuminates some unidentified face practices, both culture-general and cultural-specific.

Humour in Asian Cultures

Humour in Asian Cultures PDF Author: Jessica Milner Davis
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000591778
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 359

Book Description
This innovative book traces the impact of tradition on modern humour across several Asian countries and their cultures. Using examples from Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Chinese cultures in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the contributors explore the different cultural rules for creating and sharing humour. Humour can be a powerful lubricant when correctly interpreted; mis-interpreted, it is likely to cause considerable setbacks. Over time, it has emerged and submerged in different periods and different forms in all these countries but today’s conventions still reflect traditional attitudes to and assumptions about what is appropriate in creating and using humour. Under close examination, Milner Davis and her colleagues show how forms and conventions that differ from those in the west can also be seen to possess elements in common. With examples including Mencian and other classical texts, Balinese traditional verbal humour, Korean and Taiwanese workplace humour, Japanese laughter ceremonies, performances and cartoons, as well as contemporary Chinese-language films and videos, they engage with a wide range of forms and traditions. This fascinating collection of studies will be of great interest to students and scholars of many Asian cultures, and also to those with a broader interest in humour studies. It highlights the increasing importance of understanding a wider range of cultural values in the present era of globalized communication and the importance of reliable studies of why and how cultures that are geographically related differ in their traditional uses of and assumptions about humour.
