Caging Borders and Carceral States

Caging Borders and Carceral States PDF Author: Robert T. Chase
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469651254
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 441

Book Description
This volume considers the interconnection of racial oppression in the U.S. South and West, presenting thirteen case studies that explore the ways in which citizens and migrants alike have been caged, detained, deported, and incarcerated, and what these practices tell us about state building, converging and coercive legal powers, and national sovereignty. As these studies depict the institutional development and state scaffolding of overlapping carceral regimes, they also consider how prisoners and immigrants resisted such oppression and violence by drawing on the transnational politics of human rights and liberation, transcending the isolation of incarceration, detention, deportation and the boundaries of domestic law. Contributors: Dan Berger, Ethan Blue, George T. Diaz, David Hernandez, Kelly Lytle Hernandez, Pippa Holloway, Volker Janssen, Talitha L. LeFlouria, Heather McCarty, Douglas K. Miller, Vivien Miller, Donna Murch, and Keramet Ann Reiter.

Book Description
On Friday, July 27, 1973, two records were set: (1) The temperature climbed to 96 degrees, the hottest day recorded that year and (2) a riot at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary became the worst prison riot in US history. Read the true accounts. Four inmates died and twenty-three hostages were seized; several employees were injured, and some never recovered. Twelve years later, it happened again; this time, the reason for the riot centered on one primary issue--control, and who should have it. Order was restored; the inmates were locked down and confined to their cells, as it remains today nearly three decades later. In 1988, a riot broke out at the Mack Alford Correctional Center over a simple burglary. Hostages were taken and buildings were set ablaze. In 1983, at the Dick Conner Correctional Center, an inmate was shot and killed during a riot when the facility kitchen ran out of food on a hot August day. DAN REYNOLDS uses first-hand knowledge to describe in detail the true events of the four major riots in Oklahoma history. See the unique and rare collection of over 200 photographs collected by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Oklahoma National Guard, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma Historical Society, and those taken by the author himself.
