A Handbook of Descriptive Astronomy (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: George Frederick Chambers
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484272384
Category : Science

Pages : 976

Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of Descriptive Astronomy The present edition extends to 961 pages as against 856 in the case of the last edition, but these figures quite fail to convey an idea of the amount of the new matter now given, because large type has been in many places replaced by small type and blank backs of Plates occupied by type, so that the net increase in the contents of the volume is not less than 200 pages. I have to acknowledge a great amount of very useful advice and assistance from observers in all parts of the world, most of them total strangers to me, many of them being persons I had never heard of until the receipt of their letters. Indeed, the letters that I have received, especially from the United States of America, have been a very gratifying encouragement to me to persevere in improving this work in every possible way. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Descriptive Astronomy: A Text-Book The purely descriptive matter about the sun, moon, planets, etc., has been kept quite free from such statistics as the values Of the masses of the planets, and the intensity of the pull of gravitation at the surface Of each. The student should, however, learn the distance, diameter, time of revolution, and time of rotation of each planet. More extended data for purposes Of reference are to be found in the Appendices. In this edition the results of the latest important investigations and discoveries have been stated. The work Of the Lick Observa tory, as set forth in the publications of the Astronomical Society Of the Pacific, merits and has received much attention. The columns of astronomical periodicals have furnished a large amount Of reliable information.' The author will welcome for a second edition any suggestions or corrections. Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy, Vol. 1: The Sun, Planets, and Comets The last edition having reached to nearly 1000 pages it became quite clear that the now necessary additions would have swelled the work to a bulk and consequent price which probably the Public would not have regarded with favour. Accordingly when its division into two volumes became a necessity, I deter mined to make the two into three, and to complete the under taking as originally conceived twenty-nine years ago. First Observations in Astronomy

First Observations in Astronomy PDF Author: Mary E. Byrd
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484123297
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
Excerpt from First Observations in Astronomy: A Handbook for Schools and Colleges Real knowledge in science depends upon direct study of objects and phenomena. Astronomy is no exception. Literally to look up, to see with our own eyes and to find out by seeing, these things are the beginnings of astronomy. As a guide to first observations, this handbook has been written. With few exceptions, the mechanical appliances required can be made by a carpenter or by the students themselves. Simple tools are best at first. It needs but slight experience with protractors, plumb lines, gnomons, and sun-dials to realize how aptly they can be used in scientific training, and how much mean ing they put into different subjects. Not a little light will reach some of the dark places of geography and arithmetic, when teach ers are accustomed to make simple observations, and know how to interest boys and girls in finding the latitude of the school building with the window gnomon, and the error of the clock from the horizontal sun-dial. At present, we sometimes have so-called courses of nature study with the sun in heaven left out! A few topics of advanced character, dealing mainly with time and longitude, have been included in the final chapter; but, as a rule, simplicity of treatment has been carefully guarded, and mathematical knowledge beyond elementary branches is not required. No effort has been made to deal even in a cursory manner with descriptive astronomy. It must, of course, receive its due meed of attention, and when the sky is cloudy, or the weather very cold, emphasis is naturally placed on that part of the subject. To add vividness to the illustrations, many observations have been prepared, under the writer's direction, in different parts of the country, by different students, and are marked with their initials.
