Plankton

Plankton PDF Author: Iain M Suthers
Publisher: CSIRO PUBLISHING
ISBN: 0643099433
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
Plankton is an invaluable reference for environment managers, water authority ecologists, estuary and catchment management committees, coastal engineers, and students of invertebrate biology, environmental impact assessment and marine biology. This practical book provides a comprehensive introduction to the biology and ecology of plankton and describes its use as a tool for monitoring water quality. All the major freshwater and coastal phytoplankton and zooplankton groups are covered and their associated environmental issues are discussed. A chapter on best practice in sampling and monitoring explains how to design, implement and conduct meaningful phytoplankton and zooplankton monitoring programs in marine and freshwater habitats, as well as how to analyse and interpret the results for effective management decision-making. Real-life case studies demonstrate the use of plankton for identifying and monitoring water quality issues.

Water Science and Technology

Water Science and Technology PDF Author: Nicholas Gray
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 135181785X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 811

Book Description
Water has become one of the most important issues of our time intertwined with global warming and population expansion. The management of water supplies and the conservation of water resources remains one of the most challenging yet exciting issues of our time. Water and wastewater treatment technologies are constantly evolving creating an increasingly sustainable industry that is one of the world's largest and most interdisciplinary sectors, employing chemists, microbiologists, botanists, zoologists as well as engineers, computer specialists and a range of different management professionals. This accessible student textbook introduces the reader to the key concepts of water science and technology by explaining the fundamentals of hydrobiology, aquatic ecosystems, water treatment and supply, wastewater treatment and integrated catchment management. This fourth edition is extensively changed throughout, with new coverage of the effects of climate change, environmental assessment, sustainability and the threat to biodiversity. The text serves as a primer for both undergraduate and graduate students in either science or engineering who have an interested in freshwater biology/hydrobiology or environmental engineering. It is also useful as a unified transitional course for those who want to span the traditional areas of engineering, biology, chemistry, microbiology or business. Professionals and consultants will also find the book a useful reference.

Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms

Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms PDF Author: Lasse H. Pettersson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540682090
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 309

Book Description
Monitoring of Harmful Algae Blooms is a timely guide to the research techniques in use to monitor visible algae blooms and through remote sensing, including infrared techniques, predict them through mathematical modeling. Drawing on current and future satellite data, the book presents visible perspectives on a more efficient HAB monitoring system for the future. It also emphasizes practical applications, impacting on marine ecology, national economy, health, food and safety and quality assurance.

Estuarine Management and Quality Assessment

Estuarine Management and Quality Assessment PDF Author: J. Wilson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461594189
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
This volume presents the papers given at the meeting "Estuarine Management and Quality Assessment" held at Trinity College, Dublin in September 1983. The meeting was organised by the Environmental Sci ences Unit, TCD and the Estuarine and Brackish-Water Sciences Associ ation and was attended by delegates from the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Holland and Portugal. The theme for the meeting was deliberately chosen in an attempt to bring together the various disciplines and interests in the field of estuarine quality, and the extent to which this objective was met may be judged from the diversity of the contributions. The meeting was arranged under three sub-headings which could be roughly summar ised thu- a) Modelling - as representative of the engineering hydrodynamicist approach. b) Impact - as representative of the biologist-type approach. c) Management - attempting to reconcile the different approaches to, and demands on, the estuary. In fact, since most contributions overlapped into the other two categories, the order in this volume has been changed somewhat from the meeting, and we feel that this book may be fairly presented as one unit. Contributions for which it was not possible to give full transcripts have been included, for completeness, as abstracts. In each session, an invited speaker summarised the state of the art, and the other speakers followed up by describing some new approach to or refinement of the problem.

Freshwater Algae

Freshwater Algae PDF Author: Edward G. Bellinger
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118917138
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
This is the second edition of Freshwater Algae; thepopular guide to temperate freshwater algae. This book uniquelycombines practical information on sampling and experimentaltechniques with an explanation of basic algal taxonomy plus a keyto identify the more frequently-occurring organisms. Fullyrevised, it describes major bioindicator species in relationto key environmental parameters and their implications for aquaticmanagement. This second edition includes: the same clear writing style as the first edition to provide aneasily accessible source of information on algae within standingand flowing waters, and the problems they may cause the identification of 250 algae using a key based on readilyobservable morphological features that can be readily observedunder a conventional light microscope up-to-date information on the molecular determination of taxonomicstatus, analytical microtechniques and the potential role ofcomputer analysis in algal biology upgrades to numerous line drawings to include more detail and extraspecies information, full colour photographs of live algae –including many new images from the USA and China Bridging the gap between simple identification texts and highlyspecialised research volumes, this book is used both as a comprehensive introduction to the subject and as alaboratory manual. The new edition will be invaluable to aquaticbiologists for algal identification, and for all practitioners andresearchers working within aquatic microbiology in industry andacademia.
