Phrase Structure and Grammatical Relations in Tagalog

Phrase Structure and Grammatical Relations in Tagalog PDF Author: Paul Kroeger
Publisher: Center for the Study of Language (CSLI)
ISBN: 9780937073865
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Over the last twenty years or so, most of the work on the syntax of Philippine languages has been focused on the question of whether or not these languages can be said to have grammatical subjects, and if so which argument of a basic transitive clause should be analysed as being the subject. Paul Kroeger's contribution to this debate asserts that grammatical relations such as subject and object are syntactic notions, and must be identified on the basis of syntactic properties, rather than by semantic roles or discourse functions. A large number of syntactic processes in Tagalog uniquely select the argument which bears the nominative case. On the other hand, the data which have been used in the debate to assert the ambiguity of subjecthood are best analysed in terms of semantic rather than syntactic constraints. Together these facts support an analysis that takes the nominative argument as the subject. Kroeger examines the history of the subjecthood debate and uses data from Tagalog to test the theories that have been put forth. His conclusions entail consequences for certain linguistic concepts and theories, and lead Kroeger to assert that grammatical relations are not defined in terms of surface phrase structure configurations, contrary to the assumptions of many approaches to syntax including the Government-Binding theory. Paul Kroeger is presently doing fieldwork in Austronesian languages and teaching linguistics to fieldworkers from around the world.

Philippine and Chamorro Linguistics Before the Advent of Structuralism

Philippine and Chamorro Linguistics Before the Advent of Structuralism PDF Author: Lawrence Andrew Reid

ISBN: 9783050052144
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines

Pages : 244

Book Description
The papers assembled in this collection deal with the early linguistic sources on the languages of the Philippines and Micronesia. Tagalog, Bikol, Cebuano, Iloko, Chamorro and sundry languages of the area and beyond are featured in the papers. The focus is on the first descriptive work devoted to these languages and subsequent early treatments and their potential interdependency. Several papers also address the issue of how "modern" the early grammarians of Philippine languages were and to what extent they did typological linguistics avant la lettre. The collection is a pioneer contribution to the history of descriptive linguistics in Southeast Asia and the West Pacific. Moreover it offers a window to the past for the interested members of the modern speech communities of the languages covered by the papers.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook and Grammar of the Tagalog Language It is scarcely necessary to mention that authorities upon Tagalog have not been very plentiful, even with the great revival of interest in the malayo-polynesian languages which has taken place within the last few years. The number of works, old and new, large and small, upon this subject, or bearing upon it, is very close to forty, and many of these are of little value or are obsolete. The number of reprints, however, brings the aggregate up to about one hundred, but this has no bearing upon the material available for study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
