Book Description
"Sustainable manufacturing methods make it possible to develop products in ways which minimize negative environmental impacts, conserve energy and save natural resources whilst being economically sound. The concepts of sustainability in manufacturing being are still fairly broad, in scope, and need to be more focused and firmly established at the process, machine or factory levels. This project proposes a structure for manufacturing with a main objective to develop a sustainability framework which encompasses various production processes. Structured information models for the seamless flow of information across the design and manufacturing domains, for selected manufacturing processes, are defined. The thesis work identifies key performance indicators (KPIs) for the assessment of manufacturing sustainability and performs analysis of selected unit manufacturing processes and their sub-processes with the aim of proposing a methodology for determining science-based measurements of the manufacturing processes affecting these KPIs. The theoretical foundations established are then used to develop a model that could evaluate sustainability of selected manufacturing processes and their respective process plans providing a basis for inter-process comparison and selection of the most sustainable process plan. The proposed framework is presented in form of a manufacturing planning computer-based package which is designed to to consider different influencing factors such as product information, part geometry, material related physical and processing properties and the manufacturing equipment operating data. The thesis presents a number of case studies which have been published in international journals. The case studies present estimates of the manufacturing sustainability KPIs for a number of production methods. These estimates have been verified with available shop floor data. The work in the thesis makes it possible to establish manufacturing industry equipped to deal the challenges of the future when sustainability will be the major factor up on which the quality of success will be determined." -- Abstract.

A General Framework for Sustainability Assessment of Manufacturing Processes

A General Framework for Sustainability Assessment of Manufacturing Processes PDF Author: Mohammed Hassoun Saad
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Manufacturing processes
Languages : en
Pages : 85

Book Description
"The manufacturing sector has a major impact on the three sustainability dimensions represented by social, economic, and environmental aspects. Most of the work on sustainability assessment in the field of manufacturing is conducted at the product level or for specific processes; mainly machining with a limited number of indicators that do not capture all three dimensions of sustainability. The aim of this work is to develop a new systematic and comprehensive framework for the sustainability assessment of manufacturing processes that covers the three sustainability dimensions. Guidelines to select and quantify the relevant indicators, convert the quantified weighted indicators into dimensionless quantities, and rank the alternatives based on the aggregated scores are presented. The proposed framework combines objective and subjective weighting methods to reduce the uncertainty associated with subjective weighting. It also captures the interaction among different indicators by utilizing multi-criteria decision making methods instead of the traditional statistical methods. Sensitivity analysis is proposed to ensure the reliability and robustness of the aggregated results (final scores). A case study is carried out by applying the proposed framework to evaluate the sustainability level of four welding processes, which are Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). The four processes are used to weld aluminum 5083 plates with a thickness of 5 mm. Physical performance of the welded plates is considered as a fourth sustainability dimension to assess the quality of the welded parts. The assessment is carried out using three multi-criteria decision making methods, which are the TOPSIS, GRA and COPRAS. The results obtained from the assessment reflect that the FSW welding is the most sustainable welding process for this case with an overall sustainability score of 0.611 based on TOPSIS method, 0.753 based on GRA, and 0.317 based on the COPRAS method."--Abstract.

Book Description
The demand from consumers for more sustainable products, and the need to comply with government regulations motivates manufacturers to evaluate their operations for opportunities to reduce environmental impact and improve economic competitiveness. Manufacturers have actively improved the sustainability performance of their products through the use of sustainability assessment methods and tools. Recently however, manufacturers have struggled to maintain the necessary gains in energy and material efficiency due to the inadequacy of current, mature sustainability assessment methods and tools. This situation is compounded since new methods and tools continue to be developed for specialized applications, leading to inaccurate assessments in other domains. Overcoming these barriers requires standardized sustainability assessment methods and tools that are ready for use (plug-and-play) and contain accurate manufacturing process-level information. The research conducted herein posits that this barrier can be overcome through the advancement of information modeling and the automation of manufacturing system assessments. Thus, manufacturing process models would be composed to preserve information flows. Therefore, the work presented attempted three goals: 1) Assess the barriers to sustainable manufacturing through a review of the academic literature and roundtable meetings with industry; 2) Propose an information modeling framework to trace, capture, and control information flows within a composed manufacturing system for sustainability assessment; and 3) Develop a desktop application implementing the framework to accelerate the sustainability assessment of composed manufacturing systems. Results from realizing the framework through an underpinning XML Schema and overlaying graphical user interface indicate that the presented approach would be useful in conducting sustainable manufacturing assessments. Future work should focus on improving the robustness of the information framework and the resulting XML Schema by incorporating validation content and structure for improved quality and composability of unit manufacturing process models.

Book Description
This dissertation approaches the question of sustainability and its influence on company performance, with special focus on the manufacturing industry. In the contemporary production environment, manufacturing operations must take into account not only profit, but also environmental and social performance, in order to ensure the long-term development of the company. Companies have to decide whether they should allocate resources to environmental and social practices in order to improve their competitive advantage. Consequently, in decision-making processes concerning operations, it is important for companies to understand how to coordinate profit, people, and planet. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the current situation regarding manufacturers’ sustainable initiatives, and to explore the relationship between these sustainable practices and companies’ performance, including financial performance, operational performance, innovation performance, environmental performance, and social performance. First of all, a structured literature review was conducted to identify sustainable factors considered to be important in the decision making of manufacturing operations. The findings were synthesized into a conceptual model, which was then adopted as the basis for designing the survey instrument used in this dissertation. Drawing on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reports, empirical research was performed to explore the relationship between environmental management practices and company performance. Interestingly, the findings showed that many environmental management practices had a strong positive impact on innovation performance. Sustainability disclosures and financial performance were further analyzed using extended data from the GRI reports. The results also showed that several sustainability performance indicators, such as product responsibility, human rights, and society, displayed a significant and positive correlation with return on equity in the sample companies. In order to further explore the research area and to verify these findings, a triangulation approach was adopted and new data were collected via a survey conducted among middle and large sample companies in the Swedish manufacturing industry. The results indicated that the sustainable improvement practices had a positive impact on company performance. Some environmental and social improvement practices had a direct and positive correlation with product and process innovation. Furthermore, findings suggested that better cooperation with suppliers on environmental work could help to strengthen the organizational green capabilities of the focal companies. When considering the company’s general approach to implementing sustainable practices, some interesting findings emerged. There were limited significant differences in sustainable practices when comparing different manufacturing sectors, and different countries and regions. However, the results showed that Swedish manufacturing companies often place higher priority on implementing economic and environmental sustainability practices than on social ones. This dissertation contributes to the literature on manufacturing sustainability. The study expands the understanding of how environmental, social, or economic perspectives as a triple bottom line can influence company performance and to a certain extent the supply chain. Identifying and understanding such relationships gives companies the opportunity to integrate sustainability into their manufacturing operations strategy in order to sustain their manufacturing operations over the long term.
