It is said by those who wish to decry the voluntary efforts which have led the way that the existing schools are bad, and that the ministers of religion have been the cause of detriment to them. I am far from thinking that all that has been done has succeeded in making education what it should be, and I doubt if School Boards will succeed better; but the question I wish to raise is, whether the present system, when fully carried out, with teachers, schools, and apparatus according to its assumed standard of excellence, is not in advance of its given work, and if so, capable of doing more.
