The Plays of David Garrick

The Plays of David Garrick PDF Author: David Garrick
Publisher: SIU Press
ISBN: 9780809309689
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
David Garrick's accomplishments as an actor, manager, and theatrical innovator brought him great fame and fortune, and his ideas influenced not only his own age but succeeding ages as well. Yet as a playwright, a part of the elegant combination of talents that was David Garrick, he has never achieved the critical reputation he richly deserves, in main because of the unavailability of texts and the lack of proper assessment of the historic importance of his plays in the English theatre. This first complete edition makes available to scholars and students all the plays of GarĀrick in well edited texts, with commentary and notes. Contents: Macbeth. A Tragedy, 1744; Romeo and Juliet, 1748; The Fairies. An Opera, 1755; Catherine and Petruchio. A Comedy, 1756; Florizel and Perdita. A Dramatic Pastoral, 1756; The TemĀpest. An Opera, 1756; and King Lear. A Tragedy, 1756.

Actors, Audiences, and Emotions in the Eighteenth Century

Actors, Audiences, and Emotions in the Eighteenth Century PDF Author: Glen McGillivray
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031228995
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 231

Book Description
This book offers an innovative account of how audiences and actors emotionally interacted in the English theatre during the middle decades of the eighteenth century, a period bookended by two of its stars: David Garrick and Sarah Siddons. Drawing upon recent scholarship on the history of emotions, it uses practice theory to challenge the view that emotional interactions between actors and audiences were governed by empathy. It carefully works through how actors communicated emotions through their voices, faces and gestures, how audiences appraised these performances, and mobilised and regulated their own emotional responses. Crucially, this book reveals how theatre spaces mediated the emotional practices of audiences and actors alike. It examines how their public and frequently political interactions were enabled by these spaces.
