Book Description
Excerpt from A Complete Algebra to Accompany Ray's Series of Mathematics In the preparation of this work it was thought best not to dis pense with rules, but the student is recommended not to commit them to memory. They are intended merely as guides to the pupil, and to aid him in stating the processes employed in solving the various problems. In writing these rules, no attempt has been made to secure conciseness or elegance at the expense of clearness, the object being to state the successive steps in the solution. Book Description
Excerpt from A Complete Algebra to Accompany Ray's Series of Mathematics This work was commenced sixteen years ago at the earnest solicitation of numerous teachers, who were dissatisfied with the textbooks then in use. That they were not alone in their opinion is evidenced by the number of new treatises, or revisions of old ones, printed since that time, and now used in the schools of this country. The crudeness of even the best Algebras of a quarter-century ago was mainly owing to the fact that, as a rule, mathematicians neglected the elementary branches for the more attractive fields of Higher and Applied Mathematics; hence blunders and inconsistencies were allowed which otherwise would not have been tolerated. The wonderful progress made in the Natural Sciences, and the extended use of Algebra in the treatment of Geometrical Magnitudes, have finally called the attention of educators to the necessity of improving the elementary treatises, and more rigidly limiting the meaning of the signs. That this agitation comes none too soon is evident to every thoughtful teacher, and can be readily seen by any one who compares the various text-books used in our schools. Test Problems in Algebra

Test Problems in Algebra PDF Author: H. B. Furness

Book Description
Excerpt from Test Problems in Algebra: Prepared to Accompany Ray's Mathematical Series The test problems IN algebra are intended to supplement any text-books in Algebra that may be in use, and not to take their place. All the text-books on Algebra extant are, perhaps necessarily, deficient in the number of problems pre sented for solution; and, for years past, the need of a carefully-graded and classified supplementary list of problems has been keenly felt in those of our high schools and colleges where Algebra is thoroughly taught. Book Description
Excerpt from Ray's New Higher Algebra: Elements of Algebra, for Colleges, Schools, and Private Students It is both a demonstrative and a practical science - a system of truths and reasoning, from which is derived a collection of Rules that may be used in the solution of an endless variety of problems, not only interesting to the student, but many of which are of the highest possible utility in the arts of life. The object of the present treatise is to present an outline of this science in a brief, clear, and practical form. The aim throughout has been to demonstrate every principle, and to fur nish the student the means of understanding clearly the rationale of every process he is required to perform. No effort has been made to simplify subjects by omitting that which is difficult, but rather to present them in such a light as to render their acquisi tion within the reach of all who will take the pains to study. Book Description
Excerpt from Ray's Algebra, Vol. 2: An Analytical Treatise, Designed for High Schools and Colleges On some subjects it was necessary to be brief, to bring the work within suitable limits. For example, what is here given of the Theory of Equations, is to be regarded merely as an outline of the more practical and interesting parts of the subject, which alone is suficient for a distinct treatise, as may' be seen by refer ring to the works of Young or Hymera in English, or of defourcy er Reynaud in French. Some topics and exercises deemed both useful and interesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
