Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) involves children in school consciously assisting others to learn, and in so doing learning more effectively themselves. It encompasses peer tutoring, peer modeling, peer education, peer counseling, peer monitoring, and peer assessment, which are differentiated from other more general "co-operative learning" methods. PAL is not diluted or surrogate "teaching"; it complements and supplements (but never replaces) professional teaching--capitalizing on the unique qualities and richness of peer interaction and helping students become empowered democratically to take more responsibility for their own learning. In this book, PAL is presented as a set of dynamic, robust, effective, and flexible approaches to teaching and learning, which can be used in a range of different settings. The chapters provide descriptions of good practice blended with research findings on effectiveness. ABSTRACT: The current study was designed to investigate student learning styles, learning processes and learning flexibility in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning environments. A mixed methodological approach was used. Data were collected using the KLSI 4.0, and semistructured interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed using an inductive analysis approach and KLSI 4.0 data were analyzed using a cluster analysis. Upon analysis, three learning styles were identified in the classroom environment; experiencing, reflecting, and analyzing. Four learning process profiles (LPP) were identified along with the behaviors of note taking, listening, and connecting to real world learning behaviors. The experiencing, reflecting, and analyzing learning styles were identified in the lab, along with four LPP and watching, practicing, and communicating learning behaviors. The experiencing, reflecting, and balancing learning styles were identified in the clinical environment, with five LPP and watching, practicing and communicating learning behaviors. Learning flexibility was found to be moderately high in all environments; (M = 0.716, SD = 0.18), laboratory (M = 0.768, SD = 0.16), and clinic (M = 0.735, SD = 0.16).

There is no published research known to the author on factors that influence athletic training student enrollment in the graduate programs. An investigation was conducted to determine the factors influencing students' selection of graduate programs and their relationship to gender, age, and ethnicity. A web-based survey was developed with content adapted from the work of Johanson (2004; 2007) and Wilcox, Weber, and Andrew (2005) to assess the factors. The survey was validated through a pilot study and by a panel of experts. Newly accepted, currently enrolled, and graduate students in athletic training master's program were eligible to participate. Respondents (n=410) ranked the importance of 41 factors and submitted open-ended responses to provide further insight on their choices. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, percentages, frequencies, and cross tabulations. Overall, the graduate assistantship factor was found to be the most influential. In addition, gender, age, and ethnicity were related to certain factors (e.g., geographic factors). Implications of this study include further research on the factors influencing athletic training student's selection of graduate programs and the need for better promotion of graduate programs.
