Book Description
Abstract: PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine if any differences exist between hamstring to quadriceps ratios of offensive and defensive NCAA Division III football players. The research hypothesis was that a difference in hamstring to quadriceps strength ratios would exist between positions, with defensive players having higher hamstring to quadriceps strength than the offensive players. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirty-five subjects from one NCAA Division III collegiate football team participated in this study. Exclusion criteria included any kne injury sustained in the last 6 months and any health contraindications to exercise. Subjects were also screened for incidence of lower extremity or back injury in the last months. Each subject gave informed consent and completed a demographic intake for prior to participation. A Cybex Norm isokinetic dynamometer was used to access hamstring and quadriceps strength of the players. Testing began with a 5-minute wan up on a cycle ergometer. Each subject then performed 4 trial repetitions followed by t repetitions at 60 deg/sec, 180 deg/sec, and 300 deg/sec. Players were assigned to one the two groups based on their positions: offense(n=16) and defense(n=19). Statistical analysis was performed on the highest recorded torque for each speed. An independent samples t test was used to test the null hypothesis and to analyze the data collected on comparing hamstring to quadriceps ratios in the offensive versus defensive players. The results were reported a Means and Standard Deviations (M ±SD). Statistical significance was set at a p value
