Biodiversity in the North West
Author: Bruce Ing
Publisher: University of Chester
ISBN: 1910481653
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 103
Book Description
The historical counties of Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumberland and the Isle of Man have a rich diversity of geology, landscape, vegetation and wildlife. This is an account of an important group of fungi, the rusts and smuts, which are parasites of plants. In the past many host species were seriously affected, including wheat, barley, maize, tea and coffee, with major economic impact. Today the use of agrochemicals and the breeding of resistant varieties have reduced the losses. However, should the coffee rust become established in Brazil the global economy could be affected. After a short introduction to the biology of rusts and smuts, the physical and biological environment of the North West and the Isle of Man is described. The main part of the book is a detailed catalogue of all the species recorded in the region. These records date back to the nineteenth century but are mostly concentrated in the last sixty years, up to the present day.

British Rust Fungi
Author: Malcolm Wilson
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521279260
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
W. B. Grove's British Rust Funghi, first published by Cambridge University Press in 1913, had long been the standard work on the subject. But it had grown increasingly obsolete in the light of the intensive research devoted to the group. As early as 1938, Dr Wilson, who was reader in Mycology at Edinburg University, was encouraged to prepare a new edition. Since then it became clear that what was needed was not a revision but an entirely new book. This was three-quarters complete in 1960, when Dr Wilson's illness and death again brought it to a halt. His colleague Dr Douglas Henderson then undertook full responsibility, completing the text and redrawing all the figures. This book was published in 1966 and is now being reissued. It covers all the species of Uredinales or Rust Fungi known in Britain at the time of publication and takes into account extensive research.
