Georgia O'Keeffe and the Camera

Georgia O'Keeffe and the Camera PDF Author: Susan Danly
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 138

Book Description
From her appearance as a provocative young artist in Alfred Stieglitz's photographs to her depiction as a grande dame of the art world in silkscreens by Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keeffe captivated the media with her image of a woman as bold as her art. This beautifully illustrated book tells the stories behind the portraits of one of the 20th century's foremost American painters. O'Keeffe's professional and personal relationships with the leading photographers of her time come to light, as does her ability to shape public perceptions of her career. Stieglitz first created photographs of his protegee posing in front of her abstract artworks as a manifestation of a sexually liberated woman. O'Keeffe later redefined her image, sometimes working with photographers at her homes in New Mexico, where she emerged as a rugged individualist among the animal bones and gnarled trees that she often painted. This publication brings together for the first time, photographs by Stieglitz, Newman, Loengard, Webb, and others--many of which probe fascinating tensions between abstractionism and realism in O'Keeffe's art. In addition, a selection of O'Keeffe's works chronicles the span of her long career.

In the Vanguard

In the Vanguard PDF Author: Diana Greenwold

ISBN: 0520299698
Category : Art

Pages : 192

Book Description
In the Vanguard: Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, 1950–1969 traces the first two decades of the Haystack Mountain School of Craft’s history and its pivotal impact on the world of art and craft practice in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. The first scholarly investigation of this internationally renowned school, the exhibition, and the accompanying catalogue will feature work made at Haystack or influenced by time spent there by some of the most highly recognized names in the fields of fiber, glass, ceramics, jewelry, and graphic arts to demonstrate the school’s significant role in debates about art, craft, industry, and pedagogy in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Haystack’s model of brief summer sessions and changing instructors offered new ways of thinking about the status of craft as art and the nature of accessible design in the context of communally based, process-oriented learning. Anni Albers, Toshiko Takaezu, Jack Lenor Larsen, Kay Sekimachi, Arline Fisch, Robert Arneson, Harvey Littleton, Wolf Kahn, and Dale Chihuly are just a few of the artists who taught at the school between 1950 and 1969 and who helped define Haystack’s radically open-ended approach towards art and craft. With approximately eighty objects assembled from public and private collections and archives, many rarely or never before exhibited in a museum, In the Vanguard will establish the substantial legacy of this remote community of makers in the art and education world at large. Archival material installed throughout the exhibition will include original correspondence, photographs, brochures, architectural models, posters, and early ephemera. Published in association with the Portland Museum of Art. Exhibition dates: Portland Museum of Art, Maine: May 24–September 8, 2019 Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan: November 15, 2019–March 8, 2020

Richard Estes' Realism

Richard Estes' Realism PDF Author: Patterson Sims
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780300205121
Category : Exhibitions
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
A rich compendium of Estes' virtuosic photorealist paintings, which capture light and reflections in brilliant detail Richard Estes (b. 1932) is one of the most celebrated adopters of Photorealism; his paintings are characterized by painstaking detail that mimics the clarity and accuracy of photographs. Estes' most famous canvases from the 1970s depict New York's urban landscape, and his manner of painting reflections in a multitude of metal and glass surfaces displays astounding technical skill. In his subsequent career, Estes has continued to demonstrate his superlative ability to show complex plays of light and shadow in Maine seascapes, views of Venetian lagoons, and nighttime street scenes. Accompanying Estes' first solo exhibition of paintings in the United States in over two decades, Richard Estes' Realism surveys fifty years of his work and places him within the historical narrative of realist painting. The authors explore the ongoing modernist dialogue between camera and canvas, and discuss the situation of Estes' work at the crossroads of painting and photography. Fifty full-page plates showcase the amazing precision of Estes' paintings, and a thorough chronology and bibliography provide an enlightening account of his life. This handsome book offers a lavish presentation of Estes' spellbinding body of work that attests to his enduring artistic impact.
