Bacterial Community Structure and Diversity in Mahoning River Sediments
Chemical and Physical Characteristics of Mahoning River Sediment Before and After Fungal Bioremediation
Author: Lok Acharya
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bioremediation
Languages : en
Pages : 116
Book Description
The chemical and physical properties of Mahoning River sediments were investigated in this study. Experiments were conducted to determine how fungal remediation affected availability of toxic metals in contaminated Mahoning River sediment. The total concentrations and availability of toxic metals such as arsenic (As), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), selenium (Se) and silver (Ag) were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy(ICP-AES) in acid digests and TCLP extracts of the contaminated sediment before and after fungal remediation.

Regional Cooperation for Water Quality Improvement in Southwestern Pennsylvania
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309181313
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 294
Book Description
The city of Pittsburgh and surrounding area of southwestern Pennsylvania face complex water quality problems, due in large part to aging wastewater infrastructures that cannot handle sewer overflows and stormwater runoff, especially during wet weather. Other problems such as acid mine drainage are a legacy of the region's past coal mining, heavy industry, and manufacturing economy. Currently, water planning and management in southwestern Pennsylvania is highly fragmented; federal and state governments, 11 counties, hundreds of municipalities, and other entities all play roles, but with little coordination or cooperation. The report finds that a comprehensive, watershed-based approach is needed to effectively meet water quality standards throughout the region in the most cost-effective manner. The report outlines both technical and institutional alternatives to consider in the development and implementation of such an approach.

Statistical Methods in Water Resources
Author: D.R. Helsel
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080875084
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 539
Book Description
Data on water quality and other environmental issues are being collected at an ever-increasing rate. In the past, however, the techniques used by scientists to interpret this data have not progressed as quickly. This is a book of modern statistical methods for analysis of practical problems in water quality and water resources. The last fifteen years have seen major advances in the fields of exploratory data analysis (EDA) and robust statistical methods. The 'real-life' characteristics of environmental data tend to drive analysis towards the use of these methods. These advances are presented in a practical and relevant format. Alternate methods are compared, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each as applied to environmental data. Techniques for trend analysis and dealing with water below the detection limit are topics covered, which are of great interest to consultants in water-quality and hydrology, scientists in state, provincial and federal water resources, and geological survey agencies. The practising water resources scientist will find the worked examples using actual field data from case studies of environmental problems, of real value. Exercises at the end of each chapter enable the mechanics of the methodological process to be fully understood, with data sets included on diskette for easy use. The result is a book that is both up-to-date and immediately relevant to ongoing work in the environmental and water sciences.
