Results of the current study provide additional support for the relationship between self-referential thoughts/feelings and behavior; however, this study extends past research by providing information regarding potentially relevant basic behavioral processes. Results suggest that attention should be given to the function rather than the form of self-relevant private events and that some instances of maladaptive behavior may be the result of narrow, rigid responding to self-referential stimuli.
