This book traces the history of the Queensland Irish Association, one of the most successful ethnic organisations in Australia. Founded in 1898, it reacted against the divisive religious history of Ireland, enshrining denominational tolerance as a foundational principle. It was an engine of integration, melding evolving Irishness with primary loyalty to Australia. Remarkably resilient, it navigated wars, rebellion in Ireland, economic upheavals, and internal disruptions. The QIA celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2023, continuing as the chief custodian of Irish heritage and culture in Queensland. The makers of this history were past and present QIA members and officials. Sources included Association records and a rich heritage collection, photographs, and reminiscences.

Sir Stanley Rous and the Growth of World Football
Author: Alan Tomlinson
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527560635
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 357
Book Description
At Wembley in 1966, England’s football captain Bobby Moore received the World Cup from Queen Elizabeth and FIFA president Stanley Rous. This book takes the life of Rous (1895-1986) as a lens through which to understand the escalating profile of football both nationally and globally. It illuminates how it was possible for Rous to emerge from a Suffolk village and ascend to the top of FIFA’s hierarchy and the company of elites. Educational opportunities, service in the Great War and an international referee’s profile prepared Rous for the position of Secretary at The Football Association, alongside charity work in World War II and organisational responsibilities for the London 1948 Olympics. His FIFA role combined diplomacy with development, in post-colonial times of volatile international relations. The book informs scholars and fans alike, showing too that Rous’s crowning achievement as FIFA President at the 1966 World Cup marked a peak for England’s power and influence in world football.

The Economic Development of South-East Asia
Author: C. D. Cowan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0415526116
Category : Economic development
Languages : en
Pages : 195
Book Description
First published in 1964, The Economic Development of South-East Asia: Studies in economic history and political economy contains eight papers originally written for a study group at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. The papers, edited by Professor C. D. Cowan, are written against a background of economic underdevelopment in large parts of Asia. Economic problems increasingly plagued the governments of Asia after the Second World War, and while Western governments were willing to help foster economic development, relations with Asian governments were somewhat hindered by the heritage of their colonial past. Problems also related to the growth of traditional trading ports and export crops, and to the importation of colonial regimes, western funds and skills in the nineteenth century. Such developments come under the loosely generalised concept of imperialism, with its strongly emotional overtones, whose use impedes the objective assessment and analysis of facts. While we understand a good deal about conditions of economic growth in the West, much of what has fostered or retarded growth in other parts of the world remains less clear.
