La glucosa es una de las sustancias mAs importantes que las cElulas usan para producir energIa, pero para que la glucosa entre en estas cElulas, 2 condiciones son requeridas: las cElulas deben tener 'puertas' llamadas receptores y una hormona llamada insulina debe estar disponible para 'desbloquear' estos receptores. Una falta de los receptores o de la insulina darA lugar a un acumulamiento de glucosa en el torrente sanguIneo con un efecto negativo en su salud. Dependiendo de cuAl parte del metabolismo es la que estA fallando, hay 2 tipos de diabetes. La diabetes tipo 1 se produce cuando las cElulas productoras de insulina en el pAncreas son destruidas lo que conduce a altos niveles de azUcar en la sangre. La diabetes tipo 2 ocurre hay suficiente insulina pero no hay suficientes receptores en las cElulas que permitan entrar a la glucosa en consecuencia causando un incremento del azUcar en sangre.
