Book Description
ADHD is a highly comorbid disorder in patients with substance use disorders (SUD). This comorbid patient population is, however, often undertreated. Diagnosing ADHD in patients with SUD is not easy due to the large overlap of the ADHD characteristics with symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal. These patients often disappear prematurely from the treatment services, on the one hand because their untreated ADHD symptoms make it more diffi cult to follow the therapy, on the other hand because the treatment programs do not take their limitations into account. Caregivers expressed a great need for concrete tools to work with these patients. Therefore, “Managing ADHD in the presence of substance use disorders” consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The different aspects of the treatment are described from various therapeutic perspectives, and elaborated in ten modules with downloadable worksheets. “This is a practical and insightful book that I highly recommend to both novice and experienced clinicians alike.” Frances R. Levin, MD PhD, Columbia University Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute “For the fi rst time clinical and scientifi c knowledge is summarized and integrated in a handsome format. In addition, this book can be used by clinicians and patients in the context of psychoeducation and as a shared decision making aid.” Wim van den Brink, MD PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Addiction, Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam

Through Paediatrics to Psychoanalysis
Author: Donald W. Winnicott
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429923007
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 359
Book Description
The value of Winnicott's work has become more and more widely recognized not only among psycho-analysts but also psychologists, educators, social workers, and men and women in every branch of medicine; indeed, all whose work or practice involves the care of children in health or sickness. An important part of the value of these writings lies in the uniquely binocular view with which the author regards the subjects of his investigation. With him, pediatrics informs psycho-analysis; psycho-analysis illuminates pediatrics. This book is not concerned with innovation in basic psychoanalytic concepts or techniques, but with the formulation and testing-out of ideas whose origin was in the challenge of day-to-day clinical work that was the staple of Winnocott's medical experience throughout his professional life. This book is arranged in three sections. The first represents Winnicott's attitudes as a pediatrician prior to training in psycho-analysis, and demonstrates the degree to which a purely formal pediatric approach requires as an effective complement a deeper understanding of the emotional problems of child development.

Infant Development
Author: J. Gavin Bremner
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 9780863774621
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
An account of recent research into infant development, the text includes 13 chapters writen by British and North American infancy researchers. Although the chapters are organized along conventional lines into sections on perceptual, cognitive and social development, the emphasis (appearing both within chapters and in the linking editorial passages within sections) is on links between perceptual, cognitive and social aspects of development. Thus, new findings on infant perception are related to both old and new accounts of cognitive developemnt, and links are drawn between these topics and the development of social interaction and language. Attention is given to both traditional approaches such as Piagetian theory, and more recent approaches such as direct perception and dynamic systems theory. There is also a chapter devoted to interpreting infant development from a psychoanalytic perspective.
