101 Exercises for Developing Your Leadership

101 Exercises for Developing Your Leadership PDF Author: Céleste Grimard

Book Description
This practical book offers you a cornucopia of exercises to help you on your journey towards becoming the leader of your dreams. In this book, you will find a wide variety of exercises offering challenges related to leadership. These challenges are opportunities to grow your skills in demanding situations, to adapt to those around you, and to overcome personal challenges. The exercises also offer you guidance for reflecting on and learning from those experiences and action plans to help you practice what you have learned. Many of the exercises have been developed and polished over a period of about 20 years of use by hundreds of developing leaders. These are supplemented by exercises that provide a taste of more comprehensive discussions of leadership developed by other authors. I hope that this "taste testing" will whet your appetite for these amazing resources. When people think of leadership, they often focus on individuals influencing others towards a common goal. They don't realize that awesome leadership is built upon several foundational prerequisite layers. Before being able to lead others, we need to build effective interpersonal relationships with them. It's equally true that we must be able to lead or manage ourselves before being able to lead others effectively. Moreover, to lead ourselves, we must know ourselves very well. Each of these elements serves as a foundation of this book. Some people might prefer to skip the bottom layers of the iceberg and focus simply on getting others to follow their orders. I have organized this book according to the following five foundations of leadership: 1. Understanding what leadership means to you. This foundation helps you understand and learn from your past experiences related to leadership. These experiences greatly influence your expectations and perceptions about leadership as well as how you approach it. This foundation will help you answer the question, "What does leadership mean to me?" 2. Building self-awareness. This foundation invites you to carry out exercises for developing your self-awareness. Developing a good sense of who you are will help you plan courses of action for becoming an awesome leader. As Laurent Lapierre says: "We manage as we are." This foundation will help you answer the question, "Who am I, and how might this influence me as a leader?" 3. Exercising self-leadership. Healthy self-leadership allows you lead from a position of strength and confidence. You need to be able to manage yourself well before you can manage others. This foundation offers you exercises aimed at integrating elements of healthy self-management in your personal and work lives. This foundation will help you answer the question, "How can I manage myself effectively?" 4. Investing in interpersonal relationships. Good relationships are at the heart of leadership. This foundation presents exercises for building healthy, positive relationships and helps you reinforce your communication skills such as listening, questioning, and offering and receiving feedback. This foundation will help you answer the questions, "What do my relationships say about me?" and "How can I enrich my relationships with others?" 5. Developing your team leadership. This foundation helps you work out your own approach to leadership, including how to increase your adaptability and effectiveness as a leader. This foundation will help you answer the question, "How can I help my team become successful and energized?"

Your Mindful Compass

Your Mindful Compass PDF Author: Andrea Maloney Schara
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780615928791
Category : Families
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
"Your Mindful Compass" takes us behind the emotional curtain to see the mechanisms regulating individuals in social systems. There is great comfort and wisdom in knowing we can increase our awareness to manage the swift and ancient mechanisms of social control. We can gain greater flexibility by seeing how social controls work in systems from ants to humans. To be less controlled by others, we learn how emotional systems influence our relationship-oriented brain. People want to know what goes on in families that give rise to amazing leaders and/or terrorists. For the first time in history we can understand the systems in which we live. The social sciences have been accumulating knowledge since the early fifties as to how we are regulated by others. S. Milgram, S. Ashe, P. Zimbardo and J. Calhoun, detail the vulnerability to being duped and deceived and the difficulty of cooperating when values differ. Murray Bowen, M.D., the first researcher to observe several live-in families, for up to three years, at the National Institute of Mental Health. Describing how family members overly influence one another and distribute stress unevenly, Bowen described both how symptoms and family leaders emerge in highly stressed families. Our brain is not organized to automatically perceive that each family has an emotional system, fine-tuned by evolution and "valuing" its survival as a whole, as much as the survival of any individual. It is easier to see this emotional system function in ants or mice but not in humans. The emotional system is organized to snooker us humans: encouraging us to take sides, run away from others, to pressure others, to get sick, to blame others, and to have great difficulty in seeing our part in problems. It is hard to see that we become anxious, stressed out and even that we are difficult to deal with. But "thinking systems" can open the doors of perception, allowing us to experience the world in a different way. This book offers both coaching ideas and stories from leaders as to strategies to break out from social control by de-triangling, using paradoxes, reversals and other types of interruptions of highly linked emotional processes. Time is needed to think clearly about the automatic nature of the two against one triangle. Time and experience is required as we learn strategies to put two people together and get self outside the control of the system. In addition, it takes time to clarify and define one's principles, to know what "I" will or will not do and to be able to take a stand with others with whom we are very involved. The good news is that systems' thinking is possible for anyone. It is always possible for an individual to understand feelings and to integrate them with their more rational brains. In so doing, an individual increases his or her ability to communicate despite misunderstandings or even rejection from important others. The effort involved in creating your Mindful Compass enables us to perceive the relationship system without experiencing it's threats. The four points on the Mindful Compass are: 1) Action for Self, 2) Resistance to Forward Progress, 3) Knowledge of Social Systems and the 4) The Ability to Stand Alone. Each gives us a view of the process one enters when making an effort to define a self and build an emotional backbone. It is not easy to find our way through the social jungle. The ability to know emotional systems well enough to take a position for self and to become more differentiated is part of the natural way humans cope with pressure. Now people can use available knowledge to build an emotional backbone, by thoughtfully altering their part in the relationship system. No one knows how far one can go by making an effort to be more of a self-defined individual in relationships to others. Through increasing emotional maturity, we can find greater individual freedom at the same time that we increase our ability to cooperate and to be close to others.

Multipliers of Change

Multipliers of Change PDF Author: Wolf, Tobias
Publisher: Universitätsverlag Potsdam
ISBN: 3869564962
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 228

Book Description
Higher Education Leadership and Management have become increasingly important throughout the years due to the complexities that have to be addressed by universities worldwide. This can be seen not only in professionalisation in fields such as faculty management or in areas of quality assurance and internationalisation, but also in the need for exchange and training in academic leadership, such as that of deans or study deans, or of university leadership in general. The Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) is addressing this need in emerging countries by building platforms of exchange and offering training courses. Not only is the programme supporting capacity building of human resources, but it is also specifically focusing on inducing change within the universities, such as introducing new instruments or tools in the area of quality assurance and internationalisation, and addressing specific challenges or setting up new structures in the form of projects in the frame of the training. The ‘National Multiplication Trainings’ Programme under DIES is further addressing the sustainability and multiplication of the DIES Programme, that is, alumni are enabled to implement capacity building in higher education leadership and management in their national context. The articles within this volume of the “Potsdamer Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung” (Potsdam Contributions to Higher Education Research) analyse and share the experiences of such training programmes held in Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Malaysia, Kenya, and Uganda. They all revolve around the best ways to address the needs and challenges in higher education leadership and management, and in building capacities in these areas.

It answers: Why do even the ethics experts disagree about what ethical leadership means? What is the bigger picture that we should use as our leadership road map? What are the business benefits of intentionally using high-level ethical leadership? What can we do to be prepared for the future of ethical leadership? The examples, graphics, cases and questions provide a framework for deeply engaging constituents and building trust for the long term.

Labour Rights as Human Rights

Labour Rights as Human Rights PDF Author: Philip Alston
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Are efforts to protect workers' rights compatible with the forces of globalization? How can minimum standards designed to protect labor rights be implemented in a world in which national labor law is more and more at the mercy of international forces beyond its control? The contributors to this volume argue that international agreements and institutions are of central importance if labor rights are to be protected in a globalized economy, exploring some of the options that are open to governments, civil society, and the labor movement in the years ahead.
