Zetel, Biography of a Soul

Zetel, Biography of a Soul PDF Author: Sam Goldenberg
Publisher: FriesenPress
ISBN: 1525511734
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 389

Book Description
Zetel, a soul in Heaven, is fed up with waiting to be assigned a mortal body, so he decides to escape. The Almighty is not pleased at this, and orders his angels to retrieve him, but Zetel infuses the body of a premature baby— the son of a Jewish couple fleeing Nazi Germany in 1935. Unlike other souls, Zetel can remember and describe his origins and the celestial beings he knew, which alarms his parents, teachers, and family, who worry about his wild imagination. When the Almighty’s angels hatch plots to recover him, he forms an alliance with the Devil and eventually grows up, marries, and has a successful career. However, with repeated attempts on his life, the tension mounts as the angels try to outwit Zetel and return him to the bonds of Heaven. Intelligent, ambitious and laugh-out loud-funny, Zetel: Biography of a Soul tells the satirical story of a rebel soul while juxtaposing the tragic events of World War II and the struggle of a Jewish family against the frivolous machinations of Heaven's forces.

Poems of Guido Gezelle

Poems of Guido Gezelle PDF Author: Paul Vincent
Publisher: UCL Press
ISBN: 191063493X
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
The Bruges-born poet-priest Guido Gezelle(1830–1899) is generally considered one of the masters of nineteenth-century European lyric poetry. At the end of his life and in the first two decades of the twentieth century, Gezellewas hailed by the avant-garde as the founder of modern Flemish poetry. His unique voice was belatedly recognised in the Netherlands and often compared with his English contemporary Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889). In this bilingual anthology, award-winning translator Paul Vincent selects a representative picture of Gezelle’soutput, from devotional through narrative, to celebratory and expressionistic. Gezelle’sfavourite themes are childhood, the Flemish landscape, friendship, nature, religion and the Flemish vernacular, and his apparently simple poems conceal a sophisticated prosody and a dialogue with spiritual and literary tradition. However, an important barrier to wider international recognition of his lyric genius up to now has been the absence of translations that do justice to the vigour and musicality of Gezelle’sWest Flemish idiom. Two of the translations included go some way to redressing the balance: ‘TheWatter-Scriever’ by Scotland’s national poet Edwin Morgan and ‘A Little Leaf . . .’ by Francis Jones. Both translators make brilliant use of their own vernaculars (Glaswegian and North Yorkshire respectively) to bring Gezelleto life for the non-Dutch-speaking reader.

Wild Talents

Wild Talents PDF Author: Charles Fort
Publisher: Cosimo, Inc.
ISBN: 160206007X
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 349

Book Description
Wild Talents captures Charles Fort at his finest, most thought-provoking, and is considered his wittiest work. Containing accounts of--among numerous other bizarre topics--strange coincidences, vampires, werewolves, talking dogs, poltergeist activity, teleportation, witchcraft, vanishing people, spontaneous human combustion, and the escapades of the 'mad bats of Trinidad.' This is essential reading for those who want to learn about the early years of research into the myriad mysteries of this world and beyond. CHARLES HOY FORT (1874-1932), life-long naturalist and independent journalist, wrote ten novels, though only one, The Outcast Manufacturers (1906), was published in the U.S. - critics said it was ahead of its time, but it was commercially unsuccessful. His most recognized work, The Book of the Damned (1919), referred to "damned data" that Fort collected, phenomena for which science could not account and was thus rejected or ignored. Upon his death in 1932, more than 60,000 notes were donated to The New York Public Library.
