Dense populations of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have the potential to greatly impact water quality. By removing particulates and associated nutrients and contaminants from the water column and redistributing them to the sediments, zebra mussels affect water clarity, nutrient and contaminant cycling, and sediment quality. The purpose of this technical note describes potential changes in water quality as a result of zebra mussel infestations in aquatic systems, based on a review of the literature. The preliminary results of field studies to assess nutrient cycling are also presented. Important reference sources for more detailed information are listed at the conclusion of this technical note. Results of laboratory investigations to describe impacts at the sediment-water interface are presented in Technical Note ZMR-1-33.

One of the concerns over the invasion of zebra mussels in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) system is the rapid colonization of these organisms in backwater regions with accompanying changes in water/sediment quality and habitat value. It is expected that zebra mussels will have a pronounced effect on the sediment and water column micro-environment after colonization. For instance, zebra mussels can graze seston (phytoplankton) and, because of their high densities, can filter water at tremendous rates, thereby transferring suspended particulate matter from the water column to the sediments (Reeders and de Vaate 1990). This process may have an important impact on food web dynamics, contaminant cycling, and water/sediment quality (Bruner, Fisher, and Landrum 1994; Effler and Siegfried 1994; Holland 1993; Leach 1993; Nichols and Hopkins 1993). Zebra mussel grazing also results in increased light penetration, which could affect epipelic community productivity (Griffiths 1993) and benthic trophic levels. Excretion of feces and pseudofeces on the sediment surface (Ten Winkel and Davids 1982) could, in turn, affect sediment chemistry and nutrient dynamics at the sediment-water interface. Thus, the colonization of zebra mussels on sediments in the UMR may affect ecosystem dynamics in backwater regions. This technical note summarizes research that was conducted to examine the changes in sediment and overlying water chemistry that occur due to zebra mussel colonization.

Chemical control is a versatile and proven cost-effective method that can be used in a reactive manner to rapidly reduce the impacts of an established zebra mussel infestation. In addition, chemicals can be used proactively to prevent zebra mussel establishment at susceptible public facilities. Facilities identified as susceptible to zebra mussel infestation include those associated with raw water systems used in potable water treatment, agricultural irrigation, industry, and power generation (for example, intake structures and cooling water, irrigation, house service water and fire protection lines) and those associated with management and control of inland waterways (including navigation structures, water level control structures, vessel locks, stream level gauging stations, pumping stations, and drainage structures).

The control of zebra mussel fouling has largely involved chemical and/or physical measures, many of which are expensive and environmentally unacceptable. Chlorination and other biocides are often used to eradicate mussel fouling. Intensive posttreatment cleaning is also used, because of the strong attachment of zebra mussel byssal threads to surfaces. Novel methods of control which are environmentally acceptable are needed. Biological control, which has not been extensively explored, may yield innovative control strategies. This technical note describes a biological approach to the problem of controlling zebra mussel fouling which is based on the use of naturally occurring bacteria as control agents. The purpose of this research is to develop novel, environmentally acceptable antifouling agents, based on the use of metabolites produced by specific natural microorganisms isolated from the aquatic environment.

The Paint Lab of the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories is evaluating antifoulant and foul-release coating systems on steel and concrete test coupons. Laboratory measurements of the metal leach rates of copper, zinc, aluminum, and tin containing antifoulant coatings and monoliths are being correlated with zebra mussel population densities on similar coupons immersed in the Black Rock Channel of the Niagara River at the Black Rock Lock facility of the U.S. Army Engineer District, Buffalo, in Buffalo, NY. Population density studies and qualitative adhesion measurements of nontoxic foul-release coating systems are also under way at the same location. In addition, component-level testing of antifoulant and foul-release coating systems is being conducted at several locations in the Corps' Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (CELRD) and the Mississippi Valley Division (CEMVD). This technical note summarizes observations of component-level tests of the various coatings. The results are compared to those obtained in the laboratory and on coupon samples at Black Rock Lock.
