Book Description
Chemical control is a versatile and proven cost-effective method that can be used in a reactive manner to rapidly reduce the impacts of an established zebra mussel infestation. In addition, chemicals can be used proactively to prevent zebra mussel establishment at susceptible public facilities. Facilities identified as susceptible to zebra mussel infestation include those associated with raw water systems used in potable water treatment, agricultural irrigation, industry, and power generation (for example, intake structures and cooling water, irrigation, house service water and fire protection lines) and those associated with management and control of inland waterways (including navigation structures, water level control structures, vessel locks, stream level gauging stations, pumping stations, and drainage structures).

Book Description
The control of zebra mussel fouling has largely involved chemical and/or physical measures, many of which are expensive and environmentally unacceptable. Chlorination and other biocides are often used to eradicate mussel fouling. Intensive posttreatment cleaning is also used, because of the strong attachment of zebra mussel byssal threads to surfaces. Novel methods of control which are environmentally acceptable are needed. Biological control, which has not been extensively explored, may yield innovative control strategies. This technical note describes a biological approach to the problem of controlling zebra mussel fouling which is based on the use of naturally occurring bacteria as control agents. The purpose of this research is to develop novel, environmentally acceptable antifouling agents, based on the use of metabolites produced by specific natural microorganisms isolated from the aquatic environment.

Book Description
Since its introduction to the Great Lakes system in 1985, the zebra mussel has spread so rapidly that it is now considered the most serious biofouling pest of any exotic species. Practical Manual for Zebra Mussel Monitoring and Control will help you counter this threat by leading you through the events you will be faced with when dealing with this biofouler. This book is a crucial source of detection, monitoring, and control methods. It also provides thorough discussions regarding the mussel's biology and potential for harm. Learn how to:

Book Description
The introduction and rapid spread of the zebra mussel in North American waters has caused great concern among industrial and recreational users of these waters. This bivalve mollusk is a biofouler that attaches to any firm substrate (e.g. rocks, piers, water intake pipes, boat hulls) and has already created significant problems for raw water users such as water treatment plants and power plants. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts and Control provides essential information regarding the biology of the zebra mussel in North America and Europe, presents case studies of environmental and industrial impacts, and outlines control strategies. Summary articles detail its life history, origins, and morphology. The book also examines techniques used to culture and maintain this organism in the laboratory. Thirty-two color plates illustrate some of the dramatic problems created by the explosive population growth of this species. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control is an important resource for ecologists, conservationists, environmental consultants, water quality engineers, regulatory officials, power utilities, and libraries.

Book Description
Control and prevention of macrofouling caused by the freshwater zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas), is a major concern of managers of inland waterways, water treatment plants, and power generation facilities in many areas of eastern North America. The threat to structures in navigable waterways makes the issue of interest to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In North America, chemical applications to water have been the most commonly used method of zebra mussel treatment and control for internal and closed systems. Numerous organic and inorganic chemicals with toxicity to zebra mussels can provide versatile, cost-effective, and easy to implement ways to deal with established populations, and can prevent new infestations. Chemical treatments can be designed to protect whole systems very safely when use and discharge are carried out in compliance with environmental regulations. This report describes basic guidelines for the use of molluscicidal compounds that are currently registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for zebra mussel control.
