Book Description

Shelley's Broken World

Shelley's Broken World PDF Author: Bysshe Inigo Coffey
Publisher: Liverpool University Press
ISBN: 1800857586
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Shortlisted for the University English Book Prize 2022Shelley’s Broken World is a provocative and profound reassessment of Shelley’s poetic art and thought.Bysshe Inigo Coffey returns to a peculiarity of Shelley’s expressive repertoire first noticed by his Victorian readers and editors: his innovatory use of pauses, which registered as irregularities in ears untuned to his innovations. But his pauses are more than a quirk; various intermittences are at the centre of Shelley’s artistry and his thought. This book aims to transform the philosophical, scientific, and aesthetic contexts in which Shelley is positioned. It offers a ground-breaking analysis of his reading, and is the first study to refer to and include images of the unpublished ‘Marlow List’, a record of the books Shelley left behind him on his departure for Italy in 1818. Shelley’s prosody grew to articulate his sense that actuality is experienced as ruptured and fractured with gaps and limit-points.He shows us the weakness of the actual. As we approach the bicentenary of the poet’s death, Shelley’s Broken World provides an exciting new beginning for the study of a major Romantic poet, the history of materialism, and prosody.

Book Description
Excerpt from Pause, a Study of Its Nature and Its Rhythmical Function in Verse, Especially Blank Verse The same division may occur in prose when the subject or object is long. When the subject or object is very short, as I saw him, no pause would occur unless some element is made emphatic. The shortness of the sentence. As well as its familiarity, has fused it into a unit. Pause, then, between subject and verb or between object and verb will occur with some readers when the subject or object is modified and thus becomes logically and acoustically of sufficient importance to stand alone. Audible Punctuation PDF Author: Ronald J. J. Blankenborg

Pages : 350

Book Description
Audible Punctuation focuses on the pause in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, both as a compositional feature and as a performative aspect of delivery, arguing for the possibilities and limits of expressing phrases in performance. Ronald Blankenborg's analysis of metrical, rhythmical, syntactical, and phonological phrasing shows that the text of the Homeric epic allows for different options for performative pause--a phonetic phenomenon evidenced by phonology. From the ubiquitous compositional pauses in sense and metrical surface structure, Audible Punctuation selects the pauses that, under specific phonetic circumstances, double as rests of some duration during a performance. In this way, Blankenborg identifies those places in the verses that a performer of Homeric poetry was most likely to have used as opportunities to pause. The distribution of pauses over Homer's hexameters proves to be irregular and unpredictable because phonological phrases and grammatical clauses differ considerably in the way they terminate. The mismatch of prosodic and other levels of phrasing draws attention to the need to reassess stylistic issues, notably enjambment.
