Book Description
All Labels Aside is about one woman's journey into discovering she has autism. It follows the quirks and challenges of her life, her diagnosis, and shares the ways she has found to cope and love herself deeper than she ever thought possible. In this memoir, she is able to relate her incredible struggle to come to terms with balancing the label of autism and deep, profound, spiritual truths at the same time.Have you ever questioned your own life or the perspective of a loved one who may have autism? Have you struggled with the ups and downs of finding your authentic self amidst a world of strange social constructs we are expected to follow? This book is not only relatable to that struggle, but helpful in the fact that it does provide encouragement of what works for some of the symptoms of autism. The author wrote this book with a spiritual twist, not because she wanted to make her life public; but because there was an inner calling by the book itself to be written and shared with the world. This work of inspiration is her first book. She received her diagnosis relatively late in life, at age 36, after wondering for years what was wrong with herself socially. After researching social disorders and reading many blogs of others with an autism diagnosis, learned the striking differences between male and female characteristics of this neurological condition, a light went on and, after a year of mulling it over, got her own diagnosis, confirming what she already knew to be true. As the book called to be brought forth, the reason seemed that there was not much for autism in the way of spiritual guidance and integration of the condition. She read many autobiographies of others with the autism diagnosis, and while they were fascinating, they did not provide a deeper call to spiritual authenticity. This book also describes the author discovering what did and did not serve her soul, mind, and body, as she learned how to create an environment for herself that was soothing instead of jarring, minimizing over-stimulation and leading to a much better quality of life for her and those who know her. As soon as she knew the truth about how her brain was wired, the rest of her life suddenly made sense; school, friends, romantic relationships (not all of which were pleasant), the work force, and the seemingly endless issues or misunderstandings she found in each of these areas were no longer shocking and surprising to her. This book covers each topic of social interaction from the author's unique perspective. A wonderful contribution to the world of autism autobiographies, this book is simply another perspective to be understood by those who wish to take yet another glance into the inner world of autism, which is completely different for each individual who experiences it. Thank you for reading!

I Am in Here

I Am in Here PDF Author: Elizabeth M. Bonker
Publisher: Baker Books
ISBN: 1441237844
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 219

Book Description
She looked into my eyes and blinked hers slowly and deliberately, like a stroke victim, to show me that although she couldn't speak, she understood what I was saying to her. I stroked her hair softly. 'I know you're in there, honey,' I told her. 'We'll get you out.'" Despite the horror of seeing fifteen-month-old Elizabeth slip away into autism, her mother knew that her bright little girl was still in there. When Elizabeth eventually learned to communicate, first by using a letterboard and later by typing, the poetry she wrote became proof of a glorious, life-affirming victory for this young girl and her family. I Am in Here is the spiritual journey of a mother and daughter who refuse to give up hope, who celebrate their victories, and who keep trying to move forward despite the obstacles. Although she cannot speak, Elizabeth writes poetry that shines a light on the inner world of autism and the world around us. That poetry and her mother's stirring storytelling combine in this inspirational book to proclaim that there is always a reason to take the next step forward--with hope.

My Autistic Filter

My Autistic Filter PDF Author: Zarqnon The Embarrassed
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN: 9781703605426
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 44

Book Description
This book contains illustrations comparing how someone like me views the world vs a non-autistic person views the world, including how we view friendship, noises, sights, routine, time, and have issues with boundaries. It takes a look through illustration at why people like me are overly sensitive to noise, or have issues paying attention, or respond negatively to touch, or get upset when a routine is disrupted. I am in my 50s, so I am looking at this as an individual who has had many experiences and train wrecks. I have spent many years of self introspection, trying to understanding how my filtering system affects my ability to function and my relationship with my environment. In the last 1930s, Autism was first being diagnosed as a specific psychological process. But up until the 1960s, it was accepted as a dimension of other psychological profiles. Once it was understood as a unique neurological characteristic, studies branched out to understand exactly what it saw, because we really did not know. What about it led individuals to have a broad range of "peculiar" and atypical methodologies in experience and expression? How do these individuals acquisition knowledge and apply it to every day life? This is my understanding of how I process information. I stress that it is mine, because I realize each autistic person is unique and may have very different processing outcomes.

Songs of the Gorilla Nation

Songs of the Gorilla Nation PDF Author: Dawn Prince-Hughes
Publisher: Harmony
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
"This is a book about autism. Specifically, it is about my autism, which is both like and unlike other people's autism. But just as much, it is a story about how I emerged from the darkness of it into the beauty of it." In this elegant and thought-provoking memoir, Dawn Prince-Hughes traces her personal growth from undiagnosed autism to the moment when, as a young woman, she entered the Seattle Zoo and immediately became fascinated with the gorillas. Having suffered from a lifelong inability to relate to people in a meaningful way, Dawn was surprised to find herself irresistibly drawn to these great primates. By observing them and, later, working with them, she was finally able to emerge from her solitude and connect to living beings in a way she had never previously experienced. Songs of the Gorilla Nation is more than a story of autism, it is a paean to all that is important in life. Dawn Prince-Hughes's evocative story will undoubtedly have a lasting impact, forcing us, like the author herself, to rediscover and assess our own understanding of human emotion.

I Am Me

I Am Me PDF Author: Marlene Ringler
Publisher: Morgan James Publishing
ISBN: 1683508009
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
A mother of an adult child with autism ponders what happens to children like hers when their parents and families are no longer around to care for them. I Am Me challenges the values and priorities of institutions, communities, and systems to grapple with what is today referred to as a “tsunami”—the nearly 50,000 children who each year face an adult world so sadly unprepared to deal with their ever-growing needs. Like snowflakes, each autistic is different, no less, and deserves respect. It is a journey told through the prism of a mother who offers, hope, belief, and conviction that the life of a child with autism can and should be fulfilling and rewarding, and who compels readers to engage in helping to make the world a safer and better place for those affected by this mysterious condition. In her personal story, Dr. Marlene Ringler takes us into the world of the autistic and helps us to appreciate the complexities of living in a world where being different is a lifelong struggle. She shares her own investigation of this complex neurological disorder, looking for answers where few, if any, exist. Her fascinating journey directly addresses those very human questions as she presents her research findings and current investigations into the spectrum disorder in everyday language. “Marlene has gifted the autism community with a guide that will be useful to parents and others wishing to understand autism from the autism community at large.” —Stephen Mark Shore, EdD, author of Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome

Not My Boy!

Not My Boy! PDF Author: Rodney Peete
Publisher: Hachette+ORM
ISBN: 1401395104
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
In Not My Boy!, Rodney Peete offers not only a heartrending, candid look inside his personal journey with his son's autism but a first-of-its-kind, inspirational road map that will help families facing similar challenges to move forward. Effectively woven throughout Peete's moving account of his life with his son R.J. are the powerful voices, insights, and dreams of other fathers, high-profile figures as well as unsung heroes, who've traveled this difficult path. Autism affects four times as many boys as it does girls. For their fathers, expectations and hopes are drastically changed -- as NFL star Rodney Peete's were when his son R.J. was diagnosed at the age of three. After a period of anger and denial, an all-too-common reaction among fathers, Rodney joined his wife, Holly, in her efforts to help their son. With determination, love, and understanding, the family worked with R.J. to help him once again engage with the world. Eight challenging years later, R.J. has gone from the son one doctor warned would never say "I love you" to a thriving, vibrant boy who scored his first soccer goal while his dad cheered from the sidelines. Praise for Not My Boy! "I wish I had something fancy to say, but this story is simply beyond words--just read it! I vote to make Rodney's book, Not My Boy!, required reading for every first-time, second-time, or any-other-time father." -- Will Smith / actor, producer "Rodney Peete writes a compelling book that will help fathers emotionally deal with the challenge of raising a child with autism. The mental toughness of a man all but disappears when faced with this reality, but Rodney's candid message will encourage anyone who is chosen to be on this journey." -- Alonzo Mourning, former NBA player "Not My Boy is a must-read for parents--especially dads--who have a child on the autism spectrum. It's inspiring, enlightening, and most importantly, truthful. Rodney gives the reader the real story on how autism can cause total dysfunction in the family, and in even the strongest of marriages, if husband and wife don't work as a team. He opens up his heart, and speaks candidly about his mistakes, all the while learning how to best help R.J. in his battle to overcome the challenges of autism. Their fight is by no means over, but the experiences that he shares will help every family, and every couple, to be better advocates, teachers, and parents." --Artie Kempner, lead director for NASCAR/NFL on Fox "A book every father needs to read! Not My Boy is about unconditional love. I read it in one weekend. . . It was and is amazing." -- Cyd Wilson, InStyle magazine
