Book Description
Hugh Walpole was praised for this 1921 novel for his distinctively vivid characters and London setting. It was greeted as a welcome departure for the popular writer, being, part satire and part fairy-tale. In this novel, Young Henry Trenchard and his sister Millicent are ready to confront a post WWI world torn by rapid change and defined by conflicts with an older generation (it was even happening back then) represented by Sir Charles Duncombe. This novel was written in the inter-war period of the 1920’s and is set in London. During this period long established social norms were rapidly being broken down. Young men came back from the war demanding employment and change, not the least the reduction of the drinking age from 21 to 18. Their stand was “if we can die for our country at 18, then surely we should be allowed to order a pint of beer!” In addition during the war years (1914 to 1918) women were employed in large numbers in factories and offices and proved they could hold their own “in a man’s environment.” With more disposable income, they demanded more freedom (from their Victorian and Edwardian parents) as well as greater independence, which led to a period known as the “Roaring Twenties”. This period gave rise to the “Flappers” and novelty dances like the Breakaway and Charleston being born. A decade of prosperity and freedom was ended with the Lindy Hop and, of course, the Wall Street Crash of 1929. ================ ABOUT THE AUTHOR SIR HUGH SEYMOUR WALPOLE, a 20th-century English novelist, had a large and varied output. Between 1909 and 1941 he wrote thirty-six novels, five volumes of short stories, two original plays and three volumes of memoirs. His range included disturbing studies of the macabre, children's stories and historical fiction, most notably his "Herries" series, set in the Lake District. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Young Enchanted, Hugh Walpole, fiction, novel, fairy tale, satire, London setting, Edwardian, flapper, Charleston, craze, Scarlet Feather, Henry Trenchard, sister, Millicent, Millie, First Day, Three Friends, High Summer, Second Phase, Action, Adventure, Peter, Letters, Cauldron, In Love, Duncombe, First Brush, Enemy, Romance, Cladgate, Life, Death, Mrs. Trenchard, Perfection, Return, Courage, Growth, Knight Errant, Mrs. Tenssen, Mrs. Westcott, Death, Battle, Recover, Breath, Worse Off, Clare, Rescue, Unknown Warrior, Beginning, roaring twenties, first world war, WWI, lindy hop, wall street crash, Charleston,

Category : Gay men
Languages : en
Pages : 157

Book Description
It's 1958, and fifteen-year-old Richie runs away from his Liverpool home and heads for London. He discovers a world of rent boys preyed on by criminal gangs yet giving each other comfort and support; the excitement of Soho in the rock'n'roll years; and love for an upper-class boy his own age. When his parents banish their son to Singapore, Richie joins the merchant navy and sets off in quest of his friend. Enchanted Youth is the follow-up to Richie McMullen's highly popular Enchanted Boy. If his first volume of memoirs was, in his word, "a journey through abuse to prostitution", the second leads him through a still more perilous time, from prostitution to love.

A River Enchanted

A River Enchanted PDF Author: Rebecca Ross
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0063056003
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
“Exquisitely written with compelling characters and romance . . . I was swept away by the enchanting and magical world Rebecca Ross crafted, and loved every moment of it.” — Sue Lynn Tan, bestselling author of Daughter of the Moon Goddess Enter the isle of Cadence in this novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divine Rivals—a Scottish-inspired fantasy brimming with enemies-to-lovers romance, magic and spirits, and a captivating mystery It starts with a letter and an ominous journey across dark waters. Ten years after being sent away to the mainland to become a bard, Jack Tamerlaine is summoned home to Cadence. Girls are going missing from the island, and Adaira, his childhood nemesis and the future leader of the clan, believes Jack is the only one who can find them. The elemental spirits that dwell in every breath of air, splash of water, blade of grass, and flicker of fire find mirth in the lives of the humans, and a bard’s music is the only way to summon them and ask that the girls be returned. Yet as Jack and Adaira get closer to solving the mystery, it becomes apparent that an older, darker secret about Cadence lurks beneath the surface, and no harp song may be strong enough to stop it. With unforgettable characters, a thrilling plot, and a lush folklore-infused world, A River Enchanted is a stirring story of duty, love, and creating harmony between opposing forces. This first book in the Elements of Cadence duology marks Rebecca Ross’s brilliant entry on the adult fantasy stage.
