Journey to a Nineteenth-Century Shtetl

Journey to a Nineteenth-Century Shtetl PDF Author: Yekhezkel Kotik
Publisher: Wayne State University Press
ISBN: 0814337333
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 543

Book Description
The first annotated English edition of a classic early-twentieth-century Yiddish memoir that vividly describes Jewish life in a small Eastern European town. Originally published in Warsaw in 1913, this beautifully written memoir offers a panoramic description of the author’s experiences growing up in Kamieniec Litewski, a Polish shtetl connected with many important events in the history of nineteenth-century Eastern European Jewry. Although the way of life portrayed in this memoir has disappeared, the historical, cultural, and folkoric material it contains will be of major interest to historians and general readers alike. Kotik’s story is the saga of a wealthy and influential family through four generations. Masterfully interwoven in this tale are colorful vignettes featuring Kotik’s family and neighbors, including rabbis and zaddikim, merchants and the poor, hasidim and mitnaggedim, scholars and illiterates, believers and heretics, matchmakers and informers, and teachers and musicians. Stories of personal warmth and despair intermingle with descriptions of the rise and decline of Jewish communal institutions and descriptions or the relationships between Jews, Russian authorities, and Polish lords. Such events as the brutal decrees of Tsar Nicholas I, the abolishment of the Jewish communal board known as the Kahal, and the Polish revolts against Russia are reflected in the lives of these people. The English edition includes a complete translation of the first volume of memoirs and contains notes elucidating terms, names, and customs, as well as bibliographical references to the research literature. The book not only acquaints new readers with the talent of a unique storyteller but also presents an important document of Jewish life during a fascinating era.

Book Description
Technical solutions This book is based on the description provided in the 40th Chapter of the Book of Ezekiel, verse by verse, and the design has been further developed to cover all the necessary aspects to provide a faultless operation of the building; planned passageways to connect the buildings and vertical communication including stairways, elevators, terraces and balconies, thus allowing a fluid movement of people and a correct functioning of the Temple. Indeed, the planned building provides a full range of necessary services including toilets, places to rest, places to eat, places of worship for the Kohanim כֹּהֲנִים , areas for other Temple staff and more. As it has been foreseen and planned, the whole building shall encompass an underground level that will provide storage areas for the Temple itself, as well as for other dependencies. Also, considering that this shall be a place where a massive influx of people can be expected, it is also very important to anticipate the need for large parking areas. Personally, I consider that it would be wrong to locate parking space on the underground level, for this Temple shall be a Holy Place and thus it must be fully respected, so the parking areas must be established outside of the complex. Of course, security and safety concerns should also be seriously considered and planned. Therefore, it is my idea to build and adjoining separate building that will provide parking space for visitors; if necessary, this additional building may also be developed on the city outskirts, establishing a public transportation service exclusive for the visitors to the Holy Temple, in order to avoid unnecessary long waits and traffic congestion. To properly achieve the purpose of providing an efficient meeting place, a practical point of encounter to thousands of visitors, the towers which are indeed present at every portal of the Holy Temple shall provide a proper vertical access to the buildings, equipped with stairways and elevators, as well as with many other services. Also, special attention has been put into the height level of the diverse atria. Although a great majority of authors represent them as having a single level, the text clearly mentions the presence of several stairways. Moreover, following inspiration from the buildings constructed by King Solomon ( מֹה 􀋄 שְׁ), in the western part I plan to include two additional buildings that may serve as resting areas for the Levites ( לויים ), that may be on duty at the Temple on any given day.

Book Description
Rambam (Maimonides, 1135-1204) is revered as one of the greatest Jewish scholars who ever lived. Among his vast contributions to Jewish scholarship is a series of thirteen core beliefs of Judaism. The brevity of this credo belies the depth of the ideas it represents. Now, Kol Menachem presents an extensive work of scholarship that will elucidate these principles for all those interested in the heart of Jewish belief. Organized into a sequence of user-friendly lessons, this series takes the reader on a journey through more than 150 traditional sources that influenced these beliefs through the ages.
