Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
A comprehensive review of the yeast cell envelope has not appeared previously and therefore this book is timely. The title of this volume was chosen to reflect the three major areas of contribution to our current understanding of the cell envelope, but we have not attempted to group chapters into subdivisions. The approach was to describe phenomena, to review the literature and to illuminate outstanding problems. It was also attempted to generate working hypotheses which may stimulate further studies. The some of these ideas be of germinal value is of more concern to us than that all of the hypotheses should stand the test of further experimentation.

Fungal Cell Wall
Author: José Ruiz-Herrera
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849366727
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
Fungal Cell Wall presents a comprehensive examination of the structure, synthesis, and growth of the fungal cell wall and explores the reasons for the cell wall's importance to the survival of fungi. Topics covered include the composition and structure of the fungal cell wall and how they are affected by endogenous and external factors; the structure and synthesis of glucans, chitin, and glycoproteins; and the mechanisms of secretion, organization, and final assembly of the cell wall components. The book also features excellent bibliographical coverage, which provides insight into the historical development of current ideas and the basis of current trends in research. Researchers and students in biology, microbiology, mycology, botany, and medical and plant pathology will find this book essential for reference information regarding fungi.

Saccharomyces
Author: Michael F. Tuite
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489926410
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
In this volume we aim to present an easy-to-read account of the genus Saccharomyces that we hope will be of value to all students and researchers wishing to exploit this important genus, be it for academic or commer cial purposes. Individual chapters have been commissioned to cover specific aspects of the biology of Saccharomyces species: growth, genetics, and metabolism, with the emphasis on methodology. Basic principles are discussed without an over-detailed, step-by-step breakdown of specific techniques, and lengthy discussions of standard molecular, biological, and biochemical techniques (e. g. , polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, protein purification, DNA sequencing) have been avoided. We hope the volume will provide a quick reference to the current status of a wide range of Saccharomyces-specific methodologies without focusing ex clusively on recent developments in molecular techniques which can be found in the ever increasing numbers of "cloning manuals. " By necessity, much of what is described in this volume concentrates on one particular species of Saccharomyces, namely Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This is not just a reflection of the authors' interests, but indicates the extent to which this simple eukaryote has been studied by biologists from all walks of life, for all sorts of reasons. If this volume can provide a broader knowledge base to the experienced yeast researcher, or ease the path of someone just starting work with Saccharomyces, then we will have achieved our aim.
