Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, 1903 The tendency of the Yearbook to increase in size, following very naturally the growth of the Department whose work it deals with, led to the production for several years of a book of inconvenient dimeh sions, and threatened, unless a different system were pursued in its preparation, very soon to make a most unwieldy volume. An earnest effort had to be made, and a change was therefore inaugurated in the preparation of the present volume, with a view to reducing its bulk. The result has been to reduce it by about 5200 pages; while the tendency to conservatism in the matter of illustrations, which for the past year or two has characterized all the publication work of the Department, has caused a reduction in the number of plates from 87 in the Year book for 1902 to 65 in the present volume. It has been impossible, of course, to effect such a marked reduction without in some measure restricting the number of articles contributed. The number in this volume, while still considerably above the average since the Yearbook was established, is 32, as against 37 last year and 33 in the Yearbook for 1901. The authors are, however, to be con gratulated upon having more nearly than ever before approached the standard of brevity which it has been sought to establish in connection with Yearbook articles, and the average length is but a fraction over 12 pages. Readers who have been in the habit of consulting the Appendix will find there also evidence of this restrictive policy in the elimination of some features to which they have become accustomed. It is believed, however, that the most important information presented in this part of the Yearbook for permanent preservation has been retained. At a risk of repetition, it must be again stated for the information of those who desire to possess a copy of the work, that the quota assigned to the Department's use is barely su cient to supply its own active coworkers, and the great majority of people desiring to secure a copy must, therefore, depend upon their Senators, Representatives. Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, 1911 Aside from the Report of the Secretary, the Yearbook of the Depart ment of Agriculture for 1911 comprises (1) 31 articles, contributed by the various branches of the Department and averaging 13 pages; (2) a statistical Appendix of 194 pages; and (3) an Index of 32 pages the volume aggregating 730 pages. The articles are illustrated by 20 text figures and 67 full-page illustrations, of which 9 are colored. Although 10 pages in excess of the Yearbook for 1910, this volume is in reality smaller and weighs less, because in most instances the full-page illustrations are printed on both sides of the sheet. This feature is an innovation introduced with a view to economy, and it is believed that the illustrations are as satisfactory as when printed in the old way. The articles included in the Yearbook have not been published elsewhere. This explanation is given for the reason that there 18 an impression that the volume is a compilation of bulletins and circulars issued during the year. Such, however, has never been the case, as it has always been the policy of the Secretary to use as Yearbook articles only absolutely new matter having a permanent value, giving preference to accounts of work undertaken and results achieved. The articles are usually reprinted in separate form after the Yearbook is issued. This gives them a wider distribution and enables the Depart ment to give applicants the specific information they desire, when it is impossible to supply the entire volume. As a matter of fact, the department's allotment of the Yearbook is distributed principally to its voluntary correspondents, in consequence of which it is necessary to refer miscellaneous applicants to Members of Congress, to whom copies are by law allotted. The edition of the Yearbook authorized by law is so that in the 18 years during which it has been issued copies have been printed and distributed, principally to farmers in every section of the country. The frontispiece to this volume is a portrait of the late Dr. S. A. Knapp, who died during the year, and whose distinguished services in behalf of the people justify this tribute to his memory. A brief article describing the work of Dr. Knapp is contributed by the Chief of the Bureau of Plant Industry. Production, acreage, and farm prices were computed from reports made to this department by thousands of regular correspondents, scattered throughout the country. Exports and imports of the United States are taken from reports of the Department Of Commerce and Labor, which in turn compiles its data from sworn statements made by persons who export or import, and statistics relating to foreign countries are taken from their Official publications (except in a few instances where none are avail able) and reduced to United States units of weight and measurement. The review of the weather conditions for. The year covered by the volume has been greatly condensed, but it is believed that it will meet the requirements of all those accustomed to consult the Appen dix of the Yearbook for such information.
