Optimization for Profit

Optimization for Profit PDF Author: Filmore E. Bender
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 9781560220145
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 568

Book Description
This major new volume provides business decisionmakers and analysts with a tool that provides a logical structure for understanding problems as well as a mathematical technique for solving them. The primary tool presented throughout Optimization for Profit is linear programming (LP)--a medium that can be mastered by any individual who seeks to improve his/her analytical and decisionmaking skills. One of the special features of Optimization for Profit is the illustration of activity analysis as the technique used to formulate problems. By using activity analysis as the problem structure, linear programming become a natural extension of the way decision makers approach problems. As a result, linear programming becomes an integral part of the thinking process of the individual. Consequently, students or practitioners can readily create a linear programming model of an entire business or any part of a business. Several chapters are devoted to describing this technique and illustrating its application to many different types of companies, including an oil refinery, a marmalade production company, and a chicken processing plant. A thorough study of Optimization for Profit will enable you to work with any manufacturer or service industry and model all or part of the operation, and then solve the model to determine how best to minimize costs or maximize profits. Many firms save hundreds of thousands of dollars each year through the application of linear programming. The authors have presented the material in this vital book so clearly and thoroughly that an individual could master the material through self-study. The inclusion of problems at the end of each chapter makes this book suitable as a textbook at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level at most colleges or universities for students of management science, operations research personnel, and applied mathematicians working in industry, government, or academia. Notable features of the book include: the practical aspects of modeling a business or any part of a business using linear programming a unique approach to explain the simplex method for solving linear programming problems real life, practical problems that are presented and solved in detail detailed instructions for those interested in solving linear programming problems on all types of computers from mainframes to PCs numerous problems provided for the benefit of the student and all of the linear programming models described in these problems as well as in the text itself are available on a diskette

The CEO Handbook: Innovations in Machinery

The CEO Handbook: Innovations in Machinery PDF Author: Fibre2Fashion
Publisher: Fibre2Fashion
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
The CEO Handbook to cover the innovations and new developments in the textile machinery. This feature shall be a voice through which the machinery companies can narrate their story of innovations. They can present their innovative machineries and new development to the textile leaders through the medium of this print feature that will be circulated to CEOs and top decision makers of textile companies within India and South East Asia. This feature will not only render visibility to their innovations but also act as a positive catalyst of success. In today’s world, textile manufacturers need to keep upgrading their machineries to stay competitive. In fact, it is the latest machinery that drives the growth of the textile and garment industry by providing efficiency and optimisation in production. To meet customers’ demands and needs, global leaders in textile machineries strive hard to come up with innovative and more efficient textile machines. The newer machines are intelligently designed to give maximum quality and optimum economic efficiency with outstanding features. The trends in shipments of machineries give an indication of which machineries are in demand. Shipments of flat-knitting machines rose by 52 per cent, while deliveries of shuttle-less looms increased by 14 per cent year-on-year in 2015, according to the 38th annual International Textile Machinery Shipment Statistics (ITMSS) released by the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF). On the other hand, shipments in some textile machinery segments experienced declines in 2015. Deliveries of new short-staple spindles fell by nearly 8 per cent from 2014 to 2015. Shipped long-staple spindles and open-end rotors decreased by 61 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively. The number of shipped draw texturing spindles fell by 26 per cent and shipments for new circular knitting machines by 6 per cent year-on-year. However, 2015 was a very good year for the segment of electronic flat knitting machines as global shipments grew by 52 per cent to 70,100 machines, the highest level since 2011. Not surprisingly, Asia received the highest share of shipments (93 per cent). China remained the world’s largest investor for flat knitting machines in 2015. Thereby, Chinese investments increased from 19,000 units to 35,500 units. But, due to rising labour and production costs, textile and garment manufacturing is shifting, to a certain extent, from China. As a result, new plants are being set up in other countries, especially in Asia and Africa. This is where the new machineries would be in demand. ‘Innovations in Machinery — The CEO Handbook’ tries to explain the advantages of various machines that will help technocrats in choosing the right machine. This volume is a collection of top most companies that inform readers about the latest innovations in textile machinery. It presents some of the leading machinery entrepreneurs from different textile verticals who have contributed to the textile industry with their innovations. New technologies and techniques in textile production are sure to draw the attention of top textile technocrats. Going beyond, this volume attempts to give a glimpse of the future of textile machinery and production. This handbook will reach the top technocrats in the textile and apparel organisations throughout the world. It will serve as an extensive source of information regarding upcoming technologies and innovations in the global textile machinery industry.

Enterprise Data Warehouse Optimization with Hadoop on IBM Power Systems Servers

Enterprise Data Warehouse Optimization with Hadoop on IBM Power Systems Servers PDF Author: Scott Vetter
Publisher: IBM Redbooks
ISBN: 0738456608
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 82

Book Description
Data warehouses were developed for many good reasons, such as providing quick query and reporting for business operations, and business performance. However, over the years, due to the explosion of applications and data volume, many existing data warehouses have become difficult to manage. Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes are taking longer, missing their allocated batch windows. In addition, data types that are required for business analysis have expanded from structured data to unstructured data. The Apache open source Hadoop platform provides a great alternative for solving these problems. IBM® has committed to open source since the early years of open Linux. IBM and Hortonworks together are committed to Apache open source software more than any other company. IBM Power SystemsTM servers are built with open technologies and are designed for mission-critical data applications. Power Systems servers use technology from the OpenPOWER Foundation, an open technology infrastructure that uses the IBM POWER® architecture to help meet the evolving needs of big data applications. The combination of Power Systems with Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) provides users with a highly efficient platform that provides leadership performance for big data workloads such as Hadoop and Spark. This IBM RedpaperTM publication provides details about Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) optimization with Hadoop on Power Systems. Many people know Power Systems from the IBM AIX® platform, but might not be familiar with IBM PowerLinuxTM, so part of this paper provides a Power Systems overview. A quick introduction to Hadoop is provided for those not familiar with the topic. Details of HDP on Power Reference architecture are included that will help both software architects and infrastructure architects understand the design. In the optimization chapter, we describe various topics: traditional EDW offload, sizing guidelines, performance tuning, IBM Elastic StorageTM Server (ESS) for data-intensive workload, IBM Big SQL as the common structured query language (SQL) engine for Hadoop platform, and tools that are available on Power Systems that are related to EDW optimization. We also dedicate some pages to the analytics components (IBM Data Science Experience (IBM DSX) and IBM SpectrumTM Conductor for Spark workload) for the Hadoop infrastructure.
