Arguments and Case
Author: Eric J. Reuland
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9789027227553
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
The ideas presented by the contributions in this volume originated in a workshop on Burzio's generalization. Burzio's Generalization (BG) states that a verb which does not assign an external theta-role to its subject does not assign structural accusative Case to an object and conversely. It connects cross-linguistic similarities between e.g. passives, raising verbs, and unaccusatives. However, it does so by linking very different properties of a predicate. This raises fundamental questions about its theoretical status. The contributions in this volume explore BG's theoretical basis. A consensus emerges that BG is, in fact, an epiphenomenon, due to the interaction of different principles of grammar. Moreover, the contributions show a striking convergence as to how BG is ultimately derived. The results obtained make a significant contribution to the further development of theories of Case and thematic relations.

Women and Girls in the Hindi Public Sphere
Author: Shobna Nijhawan
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199088543
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 406
Book Description
The emergence of periodicals in Hindi for women and girls in early-twentieth-century India helped shape the nationalist-feminist thought in the country. Analysing the format and structure of periodical literature, Shobna Nijhawan shows how it became a medium for elite and middle-class women to think in new idioms and express themselves collectively at a time of social transition and political emancipation. With case studies of Hindi women's periodicals including Stri Darpan, Grihalakshmi, and Arya Mahila, and explorations of Hindi girls' periodicals like Kumari Darpan and Kanya Manoranjan, the study brings to light the nationalist demand for home rule for women. Discussing domesticity, political emancipation, and language politics, Shobna argues that women's periodicals instigated change and were not mere witnesses. With a perceptive Introduction setting the context, the work showcases rare archival material: advice texts, advertisements and book reviews, and multiple narratives specifically meant for women and girls of early twentieth-century north India.

Skill Building Sequence for Choral Ensembles
Author: Jennifer Miceli
Publisher: UPA
ISBN: 0761866515
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
The ability to bring meaning to music notation without the assistance of an accompanist playing choral parts is a requisite skill on a musician’s journey to self-reliance and full artistic expression. Despite its importance, high performance expectations pose a challenge for choir directors to allocate discrete rehearsal time to music reading skill development. Consider for a moment an embedded music reading system that facilitates choristers’ ability to read their choral octavos; a process that develops rhythm and tonal musicianship and gives choristers the tools they need to learn music on their own. This bookintroduces an adaptable, literature-based choral music reading approach that empowers young singers with music literacy skills that point beyond the choral rehearsal and encourage independent and group music making for a lifetime.
