Book Description
Controversial and passionate, XLI Poems is e.e. cummings’ second masterful poetry collection, complete with 41 poems that were originally disregarded by publishers. Of the 152 poems included in e. e. cummings’ original manuscript for his first poetry collection, Tulips and Chimneys (1923), only 86 were published. 41 of the omitted pieces were published two years later in XLI Poems. Although written at the same time as his previous collection, the poetry demonstrates further evidence of cummings’ experimentation in form and style. Much of the work featured in this volume was designed to shock cummings’ readers. The poetry heavily focuses on themes of eroticism and controversy. The collection unironically examines the traditional sonnet and common poetic themes such as romance, death, and nature, while giving the familiar styles a modern twist. This volume features titles such as: - ‘the sky was’ - ‘of my’ - ‘when life is quite through with’ - ‘This Is The Garden’ Republished in a brand new edition by specialist poetry imprint, Ragged Hand, XLI Poems is not to be missed by collectors of e.e. cummings’ work and fans of modernist poetry.

The Poems of Lord Byron - Don Juan

The Poems of Lord Byron - Don Juan PDF Author: Jane Stabler
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040270557
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 1280

Book Description
Byron’s Don Juan is one of the greatest poems in the English language. Byron’s friends initially agreed that ‘it will be impossible to publish this’. Byron prevailed, however, and the first two cantos were issued anonymously after much editorial revision. Even in its revised form, Don Juan was perceived as a radical attack on establishment values; the poem has remained a beacon for freedom of speech and retains its power to shock. Since it was published in 1819–24, all printed editions of the poem have used the text prepared by Byron’s publishers, John Murray and John Hunt. This is the first new text of the poem to be printed in two hundred years. The Longman edition is based on a comprehensive line-by-line analysis of the manuscripts, so the text of the poem follows Byron’s own voice, pace and pauses, rather than the grammatical punctuation and more cautious word choice inserted by his nineteenth-century editors. The Longman Don Juan has been annotated afresh, allowing readers to see where Byron left open the choice of words or rhymes, and demonstrating the extraordinary breadth and depth of his literary allusions, topical and cultural references, and socially coded jokes. Textual annotation includes reception history, extensive bibliographies and a detailed chronology, situating Don Juan in the literary, scientific, dramatic, political, musical and social life of the early nineteenth century. A detailed index to the poem and annotation provides an unparalleled resource for students and scholars.

Tulips & Chimneys

Tulips & Chimneys PDF Author: E.E. Cummings
Publisher: Dover Publications
ISBN: 0486826910
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 163

Book Description
Edward Estlin Cummings (1894–1962), a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Harvard University graduate, is best known for his rejection of traditional poetic forms. As e. e. cummings, he conducted radical experiments with spelling, syntax, and punctuation that inspired a revolution in twentieth-century literary expression and excited the admiration and affection of poetry lovers of all ages. With his 1923 debut, Tulips & Chimneys, the 25-year-old poet rattled the conservative literary scene, directing his avant-garde approach to the traditional subjects of love, life, time, and beauty. His playful treatment of punctuation and language adds enduring zest to such popular and oft-anthologized poems as "All in green went my love riding," "in Just-," "Tumbling-hair," "O sweet spontaneous," "Buffalo Bill's," and "the Cambridge ladies who live in furnished souls." This edition presents complete and textually accurate editions of Cummings's work, in keeping with the original manuscripts and the poet's intentions.

The Poems of Exile

The Poems of Exile PDF Author: Ovid
Publisher: Univ of California Press

Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 540

Book Description
"This is no small achievement. For the language-lover the translation provides elegant, flowing English verse, for the classicist it conveys close approximation to the Latin meaning coupled with a sense of the movement and rhythmic variety of Ovid's language"—Geraldine Herbert-Brown, editor of Ovid's Fasti: Historical Readings at its Bimillennium "This book fills a gap. There is no similar annotated English translation of Ovid's exile poetry. Thoroughly grounded in Ovidian scholarship, Green's introduction and notes are helpful and informative. The translation is accurate, idiomatic, and lively, closely imitating the Latin elegiac couplet and capturing Ovid's changing moods."—Karl Galinsky, author of Ovid's Metamorphoses: An Introduction to the Basic Aspects
