Book Description
Just prior to the 1982 Annual Meeting of the European Thyroid Association in Brussels, a number of outstanding experts in the field of X-ray fluorescence gathered at the Academisch Ziekenhuis of the Free University of Brussels in a joint effort to more clearly define the actual place and value of the latest newcomer among the techniques available for the in vivo assessment of thyroid function. It is the merit of Prof. M. Jonckheer to have organised this meeting and to have made available the work presented there to a larger public in the form of this monograph. Both, the meeting and the written accounts thereof are greatly appreciated by all thyroidologists who care for properly defining the genuine value of X-Ray fluorescence in scientific research and in clinical management of thyroid disorder. Three main conclusions can be drawn from the work presented 1. X-ray fluorescence has become a safe, convenient and reliable tool for measuring intrathyroidal iodine stores in vivo with an inter-assay reproducibility estimated at roughly 10% 2. X-ray fluorescence, used by expert hands, is a highly interesting tool to follow changes of intra thyroidal iodine stores in time, subsequent e. g. to the exposure of the thyroid gland to excess iodine 3. In contrast, no definite place of X-ray fluorescence as a technique in routine assessment of thyroid disease is yet at the horizon This latter conclusion may appear somewhat disappointing.

X-Ray Fluorescence in Biological Sciences
Author: Vivek K. Singh
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119645581
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 692
Book Description
X-Ray Fluorescence in Biological Sciences Discover a comprehensive exploration of X-ray fluorescence in chemical biology and the clinical and plant sciences In X-Ray Fluorescence in Biological Sciences: Principles, Instrumentation, and Applications, a team of accomplished researchers delivers extensive coverage of the application of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) in the biological sciences, including chemical biology, clinical science, and plant science. The book also explores recent advances in XRF imaging techniques in these fields. The authors focus on understanding and investigating the intercellular structures and metals in plant cells, with advanced discussions of recently developed micro-analytical methods, like energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF), total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF), micro-proton induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE), electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPXMA), synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy (SXRF, SRIXE, or micro-XRF) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). With thorough descriptions of protocols and practical approaches, the book also includes: A thorough introduction to the historical background and fundamentals of X-ray fluorescence, as well as recent developments in X-ray fluorescence analysis Comprehensive explorations of the general properties, production, and detection of X-rays and the preparation of samples for X-ray fluorescence analysis Practical discussions of the quantification of prepared samples observed under X-ray fluorescence and the relation between precision and beam size and sample amount In-depth examinations of wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence and living materials Perfect for students and researchers studying the natural and chemical sciences, medical biology, plant physiology, agriculture, and botany, X-Ray Fluorescence in Biological Sciences: Principles, Instrumentation, and Applications will also earn a place in the libraries of researchers at biotechnology companies.

Percutaneous Penetration Enhancers
Author: Eric Wane Smith
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849326059
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 516
Book Description
This book is a comprehensive reference on the methods available for the enhancement of percutaneous penetration. It examines a broad scope of chemical enhancers and various physical methods of enhancement. The range of chemicals discussed in this volume is unsurpassed anywhere in the literature. Scientists can find invaluable information in this single source on 95 percent of the enhancers being researched today! Each well-illustrated chapter is written by the world's leading authorities in the field. Introductory chapters outline the concept of penetration enhancement from first principles and provide a comprehensive classification of different types of enhancers.Chapters covering chemical enhancers are clear, concise, and easy to understand, even for novice readers in this field. The latest techniques by which drugs can be forced physically through the skin are also covered in depth. Equipment is detailed, typical drug candidates for the techniques are described, and the success to date is provided. Percutaneous Penetration Enhancers is the first book to present modern analytical techniques that have been used to assess penetration enhancement. The book also offers future perspectives for enhancers. New approaches and current limitations on knowledge and understanding of the topic are suggested. This timely source book is invaluable for clinical reference or for the design of scientific studies.
