Book Description
This revised edition of The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross was produced to mark the fourth centenary of the death of St. John of the Cross (1542–1591). The result is an English translation of his writings that preserves the authentic meaning of the great mystic’s writings, presents them as clearly as possible, and at the same time gives the reader the doctrinal and historical information that will lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the teachings of the Mystical Doctor. Included in The Collected Works are St. John’s poetry, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Dark Night, The Spiritual Canticle, and The Living Flame of Love, as well as his extant letters and other counsels. More Information: In addition to the respective page listings in the contents, this new edition features gray page tabs that separate the individual works, enabling the reader to more easily locate a desired section of the book. Complementing St. John’s writings are a comprehensive General Introduction for the entire work, as well as brief, enlightening introductions for each specific work, explaining theme and structure. These are enhanced by new and expanded footnotes, a glossary of terms, and general and scriptural indices. About the Translators Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D. The Ascent of Joy

The Ascent of Joy PDF Author: Saint John of the Cross
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
A perfect introduction to John of the Cross’ writings, this anthology makes the Spanish saint and mystic accessible to the average reader. Contains ample introductions and annotations, opening up the complete spectrum of John’s spirituality. “In this well-crafted introduction and anthology, Marc Foley leads the reader step by step into the very heart of the spiritual way taught by John of the Cross. Nearly every serious spiritual seeker at some point experiences a need to look to the teaching of this sixteenth-century Spanish saint and mystic for guidance, especially when one faces one's personal ‘night of the soul.’ Here, the student or seeker can gain an intimate acquaintance not only with the rigor for which John is so well-known, but also with his tenderness, his passion, and his poetic heart. Foley provides substantial introductions and notes, but the core of the teaching is developed in carefully-selected excerpts from John's own writings. The special gift of Ascent to Joy is that these excerpts are presented in a systematic order, so that the text can function both as a primer of John's teaching and as a profound introduction to the contemplative way. This volume fills a much-needed niche in the array of spiritual books available today.” Mary Frohlich Catholic Theological Union Chicago, IL

St John of the Cross: His Life and Poetry

St John of the Cross: His Life and Poetry PDF Author: Gerald Brenan
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521200066
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The paperback edition of a very successful and in some ways remarkable book, first published in 1973. Gerald Brenan is well known for his 'expository' works on Spanish history and literature, and now in his eighties he has returned to an early interest in the Spanish mystics to produce an absorbing study of St John of the Cross, one of the foremost of Catholic mystics and poets. The book is perhaps the first in English to combine an objective - but sensitive and lively - account of St John's life with a fresh translation (by Mr Brenan's associate Lynda Nicholson) of his verse.

The Spiritual Combat The Dark Night of the Soul The Way of the Cross (illustrated & annotated)

The Spiritual Combat The Dark Night of the Soul The Way of the Cross (illustrated & annotated) PDF Author: Lorenzo Scupoli
Publisher: BookRix
ISBN: 373098991X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 430

Book Description
Your Special Illustrated & annotated edition includes: •14 Pen & Ink Stations of the Cross by Jacob Rice •Extensive Glossary of time-honored Catholic expressions •Stabat Mater in both English & Latin •Essay Narrative on the Last Hours of John of the Cross +Spiritual Combat - For over 400 years, Fr. Scupoli's the Spiritual Combat has provided time-tested strategies for achieving victory over the flesh and the devil, and is acknowledged to be one of the greatest guides to guide one to virtue in time of temptation. St. Frances de Sales carried this little work wherever he went, consulting it often. The Spiritual Combat is one of the all-time greatest and best-known classics on the spiritual life and is a book that will inspire and instruct today just as it has for over 400 years. +Dark Night of the Soul - The Dark night has been described as a point of deep "spiritual crisis" and the pathway Fray John lays out isn't merely to recover but to thrive and experience true union with God. This is mysticism with a purpose, to change your life right now, to become more like Christ every day. This is no bleak night but a bright light of hope lit on a clear path to living holiness by the premier spiritual master, St. John of the Cross. In a homily commemorating the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, Pope Francis remarked "I think of the dark night of the soul of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta" and is inspired with the hope only Christ can give each of us. Together St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila are considered the founders of the Discalced Carmelites. +The Way of the Cross - St. Alphonsus Liguori's method is the most treasured way of praying the stations ever to bless Christendom. The Saint is also the creator of the classic "The Glories of Mary." The pious practice has been around since Christians visited the Holy Land the the 5th Century and emulated the actual way of the cross. In the 14th century, to remind Catholics of the ties to the Holy land the Franciscans promoted the devotion and ever since it has become an annual Lenten tradition.
