Gold

Gold PDF Author: John J. Dempsey

Book Description
Gold is an enigmatic metal that has fascinated man for centuries. Historically, gold has been used as money and as a store of wealth. The official monetary connection with gold was broken in 1971. Since that year, gold has performed the dual role of investment commodity, and monetary reserve. Although it is no longer officially used as a medium of exchange between nations, gold continues to be highly valued as a store of wealth. Despite the removal of artificial barriers controlling the gold price, the decade of the 1970's saw a decline in gold production. Investors were also relatively apathetic toward gold investment. The 1980's, have seen a shift in attitudes toward gold. The historically high prices of 1980 and 1981, created renewed interest in gold. Mining companies, realizing that the gold industry afforded attractive profit opportunities, shifted emphasis from base metal production to gold production. As a result, gold production has increased each year since 1980. This thesis examines the world of gold in 1988 through historical perspective and present day application. Discussions of the gold standard and gold price explain the role of gold in past and present monetary systems. Chapters on exploration, mining, and extractive techniques illustrate the extent to which modern technology has revolutionized the gold industry. Improved methods have lead to increasing supplies of newly mined gold, and have enlarged profit margins. Gold producing countries all over the world are very active in exploration and production of gold. The major producing nations are profiled, and the important deposits are identified. Concurrently, creative investment opportunities have increased investment demand. This has made gold ownership more prevalent and more wide-spread than at any other time in history. Chapters on gold markets and gold investment outline the current methodology of gold trading: where and how it is accomplished. The final chapter discusses the future of gold, in the context of supply, demand, and price. Gold's long-term out-look is difficult to define. Short-term prospects, however, point to a continuance of the present gold boom in supply and investment, provided the gold price remains high enough to sustain acceptable profits.

Critical Mineral Resources of the United States

Critical Mineral Resources of the United States PDF Author: K. J. Schulz
Publisher: Geological Survey
ISBN: 9781411339910
Category : Industrial minerals
Languages : en
Pages : 868

Book Description
As the importance and dependence of specific mineral commodities increase, so does concern about their supply. The United States is currently 100 percent reliant on foreign sources for 20 mineral commodities and imports the majority of its supply of more than 50 mineral commodities. Mineral commodities that have important uses and face potential supply disruption are critical to American economic and national security. However, a mineral commodity's importance and the nature of its supply chain can change with time; a mineral commodity that may not have been considered critical 25 years ago may be critical today, and one considered critical today may not be so in the future. The U.S. Geological Survey has produced this volume to describe a select group of mineral commodities currently critical to our economy and security. For each mineral commodity covered, the authors provide a comprehensive look at (1) the commodity's use; (2) the geology and global distribution of the mineral deposit types that account for the present and possible future supply of the commodity; (3) the current status of production, reserves, and resources in the United States and globally; and (4) environmental considerations related to the commodity's production from different types of mineral deposits. The volume describes U.S. critical mineral resources in a global context, for no country can be self-sufficient for all its mineral commodity needs, and the United States will always rely on global mineral commodity supply chains. This volume provides the scientific understanding of critical mineral resources required for informed decisionmaking by those responsible for ensuring that the United States has a secure and sustainable supply of mineral commodities.

Terraforming Mars

Terraforming Mars PDF Author: Martin Beech
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119761964
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 596

Book Description
TERRAFORMING MARS This book provides a thorough scientific review of how Mars might eventually be colonized, industrialized, and transformed into a world better suited to human habitation. The idea of terraforming Mars has, in recent times, become a topic of intense scientific interest and great public debate. Stimulated in part by the contemporary imperative to begin geoengineering Earth, as a means to combat global climate change, the terraforming of Mars will work to make its presently hostile environment more suitable to life—especially human life. Geoengineering and terraforming, at their core, have the same goal—that is to enhance (or revive) the ability of a specific environment to support human life, society, and industry. The chapters in this text, written by experts in their respective fields, are accordingly in resonance with the important, and ongoing discussions concerning the human stewardship of global climate systems. In this sense, the text is both timely and relevant and will cover issues relating to topics that will only grow in their relevance in future decades. The notion of terraforming Mars is not a new one, as such, and it has long played as the background narrative in many science fiction novels. This book, however, deals exclusively with what is physically possible, and what might conceivably be put into actual practice within the next several human generations. Audience Researchers in planetary science, astronomy, astrobiology, space engineering, architecture, ethics, as well as members of the space industry.
