The Letters of Samuel Johnson, Volume III

The Letters of Samuel Johnson, Volume III PDF Author: Samuel Johnson
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400862132
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
The Hyde Edition offers scores of texts transcribed for the first time from the original documents a feature of special importance in the case of Johnson's revealing letters to Hester Thrale, many of which have been available only in expurgated form. The Hyde Edition is also the first systematically to record substantive deletions, which can yield intimate knowledge of Johnson's stylistic procedures, mental habits, and chains of association. Furthermore, its ownership credits document the current disposition of the manuscripts, hundreds of which have changed hands during the last four decades. Finally, the annotation of the letters incorporates the many significant discoveries of postwar Johnsonian scholarship, as well as decoding references that had previously resisted explanation. The result is a far richer understanding of Samuel Johnson's life, work, and milieu. Originally published in 1992. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Class and Other Identities

Class and Other Identities PDF Author: Lex Heerma van Voss
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1785330578
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
With the onset of a more conservative political climate in the 1980s, social and especially labour history saw a decline in the popularity that they had enjoyed throughout the 1960s and 1970s. This led to much debate on its future and function within the historical discipline as a whole. Some critics declared it dead altogether. Others have proposed a change of direction and a more or less exclusive focus on images and texts. The most constructive proposals have suggested that labour history in the past concentrated too much on class and that other identities of working people should be taken into account to a larger extent than they had been previously, such as gender, religion, and ethnicity. Although class as a social category is still as valid as it has been before, the questions now to be asked are to what extent non-class identities shape working people's lives and mentalities and how these are linked with the class system. In this volume some of the leading European historians of labour and the working classes address these questions. Two non-European scholars comment on their findings from an Indian, resp. American, point of view. The volume is rounded off by a most useful bibliography of recent studies in European labour history, class, gender, religion, and ethnicity.

Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 0486442349
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 325

Book Description
The three-volume series History of the Theory of Numbers is the work of the distinguished mathematician Leonard Eugene Dickson, who taught at the University of Chicago for four decades and is celebrated for his many contributions to number theory and group theory. This final volume in the series, which is suitable for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, is devoted to quadratic and higher forms. Topics include reduction and equivalence of binary quadratic forms and representation of integers; composition of binary quadratic forms; the composition of orders and genera; irregular determinants; classes of binary quadratic forms with integral coefficients; binary quadratic forms whose coefficients are complete integers or integers of a field; classes of binary quadratic forms with complex integral coefficients; ternary and quaternary quadratic forms; cubic forms in three or more variables; binary hermitian forms; bilinear forms, matrices, and linear substitutions; congruencial theory of forms; and many other related topics. Indexes of authors cited and subjects appear at the end of the book.
