Does working fewer hours lead to better health outcomes? This study answers this question in the context of China's Workweek Reduction Policy. In 1995, China reduced the weekly working hours of state employees from 48 hours to 40 hours without changing their wages. By using China Health and Nutrition Survey data from 1991 to 2000, we compared the health outcomes of state and non-state employees before and after this policy using a difference-in-differences approach. Empirical analysis suggests that reducing working hours is detrimental to the health statuses of Chinese state employees. This result may be associated with the increased drinking of state employees following policy implementation. We observed that state employees spent more time in activities related to alcohol consumption and that men were more negatively affected by the policy because they are the primary consumers of alcohol. From a policy perspective, policymakers should pay more attention to social-economic policies' potential effects on individual unhealthy behaviors.
