Book Description
This book examines women's participation in the cocaine/crack economy of New York City. All the women are or were long-term drug dealers, not those who casually dealt drugs. In order to be included in the authors' study, a person had to have sold drugs for at least two years. Many of the respondents were involved in drug distribution for considerably longer periods. Thus, the voices heard here are of those who had substantial drug selling careers. The authors' seek to describe the lives of women drug dealers -- not so much from their point of view, as from the women's own. In the research undertaken, they sought to listen to the women and understand the cultural perspectives through which they created their lives. Thus, the women are represented as responsive subjects and present their world as close as possible to how they saw it. Throughout the book, the women describe their experiences through their own vernacular.

Donna Summer's Once Upon a Time
Author: Alex Jeffery
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501355473
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
Contradicting assumptions that disco albums are shallow and packed with filler, Donna Summer's double album Once Upon A Time stands out as a piece that delivers on its promise of an immaculately crafted journey from start to finish. A new interpretation of the Cinderella story, it is set in the then contemporary world of New York disco and takes the listener on a journey from urban isolation and deep despair to joy and vindication, all filtered through the mind of its naïve and fantasy-prone protagonist. As well as charting the production of the album within the legendary Munich Machine in Germany, this book digs deep into the album's rich themes and subtexts. Approaching the book from inventive angles, the four essays within the book act as a prism connecting the reader to the classical aspirations of Eurodisco, the history of the black fairy tale and a queer knowledge that reads Summer's Cinderella tale in some surprising ways.

Work Won't Love You Back
Author: Sarah Jaffe
Publisher: Bold Type Books
ISBN: 1568589387
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 432
Book Description
A deeply-reported examination of why "doing what you love" is a recipe for exploitation, creating a new tyranny of work in which we cheerily acquiesce to doing jobs that take over our lives. You're told that if you "do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." Whether it's working for "exposure" and "experience," or enduring poor treatment in the name of "being part of the family," all employees are pushed to make sacrifices for the privilege of being able to do what we love. In Work Won't Love You Back, Sarah Jaffe, a preeminent voice on labor, inequality, and social movements, examines this "labor of love" myth—the idea that certain work is not really work, and therefore should be done out of passion instead of pay. Told through the lives and experiences of workers in various industries—from the unpaid intern, to the overworked teacher, to the nonprofit worker and even the professional athlete—Jaffe reveals how all of us have been tricked into buying into a new tyranny of work. As Jaffe argues, understanding the trap of the labor of love will empower us to work less and demand what our work is worth. And once freed from those binds, we can finally figure out what actually gives us joy, pleasure, and satisfaction.
