Was Jesus a Socialist?

Was Jesus a Socialist? PDF Author: Lawrence W. Reed
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1684516617
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
"If anyone was ever a socialist, it was Jesus."—Kelley Rose, Democratic Socialists of America Economist and historian Lawrence W. Reed has been hearing people say "Jesus was a socialist" for fifty years. And it has always bothered him. Now he is doing something about it. His new book demolishes the claim that Jesus was a socialist. Jesus called on earthly governments to redistribute wealth? Or centrally plan the economy? Or even impose a welfare state? Hardly. Point by point, Reed answers the claims of socialists and progressives who try to enlist Jesus in their causes. As he reveals, nothing in the New Testament supports their contentions. Was Jesus a Socialist? could not be more timely. Socialism has made a shocking comeback in America. Poll after poll shows that young Americans have a positive image of socialism. In fact, more than half say they would rather live in a socialist country than in a capitalist one. And as socialism has come back into vogue, more and more of its advocates have tried to convince us that Jesus was a socialist. This rhetoric has had an impact. According to a 2016 poll by the Barna Group, Americans think socialism aligns better with Jesus's teachings than capitalism does. When respondents were asked which of that year's presidential candidates aligned closest to Jesus's teachings, a self-proclaimed "democratic socialist" came out on top. Sure enough, the same candidate earned more primary votes from under-thirty voters than did the eventual Democratic and Republican nominees combined. And in a 2019 survey, more than 70 percent of millennials said they were likely to vote for a socialist. Was Jesus a Socialist? expands on the immensely popular video of the same name that Reed recorded for Prager University in July 2019. That video has attracted more than four million views online. Ultimately, Reed shows the foolishness of trying to enlist Jesus in any political cause today. He writes: "While I don't believe it is valid to claim that Jesus was a socialist, I also don't think it is valid to argue that he was a capitalist. Neither was he a Republican or a Democrat. These are modern-day terms, and to apply any of them to Jesus is to limit him to but a fraction of who he was and what he taught."

Christ's Object Lessons—Illustrated

Christ's Object Lessons—Illustrated PDF Author: Ellen G. White
Publisher: Digital Inspiration
ISBN: 1427614326
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
Heritage Edition—Over 100 illustrations of a century ago. Unabridged, original text consisting of inspiring and profound lessons from the stories and parables which Jesus told. Christ the Great Teacher gave much of His instruction as He walked with His disciples through the hills and valleys of Palestine or rested by the lake or river. In His parable teaching He linked divine truth with common things and incidents, as may be found in the experiences of the shepherd, the builder, the tiller of the soil, the traveler, and the homemaker. Familiar objects were associated with thoughts true and beautiful—thoughts of God’s loving interest in us, of the grateful homage that is His due, and of the care we should have one for another. Thus lessons of divine wisdom and practical truth were made forcible and impressive. The Scripture says, “All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; . . . that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.” Matt. 13:34, 35. Natural things were the medium for the spiritual; the things of nature and the life-experience of His hearers were connected with the truths of the written word. Leading thus from the natural to the spiritual kingdom, Christ’s parables are links in the chain of truth that unites man with God, and earth with heaven. In this volume the parables are grouped according to their subjects, and their lessons are developed and illustrated. The book is full of gems of truth, and to many readers it will give a richer meaning to the common surroundings of everyday life.

In the Vineyard

In the Vineyard PDF Author: Rev. E. F. Burr
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 460

Book Description
Excerpt from In the Vineyard: A Plea for Christian Work The attention of believers is being drawn to the matter of christian Won]: as never before since the days of the apostles. It is high time. Nineteen cen tuties of our era have nearly gone, and yet the greater part of the world is lying in almost utter ignorance of the gospel and even in so-called Christian countries, most of the people are in an unconverted and perishing state. What a clarion-summons \in such facts! Is it being suficiently heeded? With all the gain lately made (and that it is very great let us joyfully confess), it is still true, that most professing Christians, even of those not unexemplary in other respects, are doing very little to spread the religion they accept. Only by courtesy can they be called laborer: in the vineyard. They are not even in the market-place, waiting for work. The Master is not yet done saying, The har vest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. The aim of this volume is altogether practical. It seeks to promote that active efiort in the cause of Christ which his law requires, and which the needs of a world in large part still lying in wickedness beg for with most affecting importunity, but which is still so insufficiently granted. And this end is sought, first, by the persuasion of illustrious examples, and, secondb', by such appeals, as, without a show of argument, but with all its substance, may present in an orderly and vivid manner the leading principles, methods, and te wards oi work in the Vineyard.
